Hat trick for Dean Johnston

Talented Hunter Valley teenager Dean Johnston won the Telstra Road to Tamworth 2007 heat in Casino last month. It started a sequence of events over four weeks that notched up considerable recognition for his music career.

The next weekend June 25 he was named APRA/AMCOS 2006 MATS Music & Arts Talent Search Teen Songwriter of the Year first runner-up at Sydney’s Revesby Workers Club and on July 9 he made the semi finals of the ScoopFX 2006 Search For A Star at Castle Hill R.S.L Sydney where he performed before judges Stephen Kiely Song Producer and Principal Scoop FX ; Liz Taylor Deltra Goodrem Management and Adam Saunders from Home & Away.

Organisers of the ScoopFX 2006 Search For A Star said ‘The room was transformed into a country pub atmosphere at the beginning of the second half by Dean Johnston who accompanied himself on guitar as he sang a song of his own the foot-tapping and amusing What's An Aussie Bloke Supposed To Do.’

No stranger to performing from an early age Dean was ecstatic about the ultimate competition 2007 Telstra Road To Tamworth Casino heat win ‘I’m overwhelmed by the great talent I was up against. Winning this is the greatest opportunity of my life’.

The nationwide talent quest heat winners qualify for the finals to be held at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2007. As a heat winner Dean receives a $1000 prize to assist with his travel to Tamworth where the top eight finalists each receive a $500 MP-3 player and progress to the Grand Final.

The competition offers two prize trips to Nashville as part of the $80,000 prize package which includes a return economy air fare. Part of the prize package includes a single recorded and produced in Nashville, a video clip produced by Entertainment Edge and several opportunities to perform live at selected venues while in Nashville . One trip goes to the overall winner and the other to an aspiring writer through the Songwriters’ Encouragement Award.

‘I'm into martial arts, weightlifting, riding my horse, modifying my car and songwriting. I would be a bull rider but my Mum won't let me’

Singing country music and travelling to Tamworth has been a part of Dean’s life and his family’s for the last seven years.

‘We stay the whole time, make new friends, catch up with old ones and perform and enjoy other acts. It’s great.’

The laid back eighteen year old describes his country music tastes as country rock mixed with a little contemporary. His ultimate musical experience is to sing on stage with Adam Harvey and Garth Brooks in Nashville.

‘That’s where it all seems to be happening’ he said.
