TENNEESSEE- ALABAMA-TEXAS TOUR 2006

What an incredible journey this was, I would like to share it with you…
1/5/06
Flew out of Sydney bound for Nashville via San Francisco & Chicago
I arrived in San Franciso and changed aircraft to go to Chicago. I arrived in Chicago and was directed to the wrong terminal for my connecting flight. I arrived at the correct terminal in time to see the plane take off with my clothing & guitar bound for Nashville without me..  What a scary thing to be alone in Chicago at 11pm…United Airlines checked me into a luxury Hotel in Chicago near the airport and picked me up the next morning for my flight to Nashville
3/5/06
I flew by Lear Jet into Nashville and we were delayed by a storm over Nashville and had to fly around for about 30 minutes before we could land….My first thought was “What a good idea for a song” So I wrote a song which will be on my new album “Clouds Over Nashville”…..My co passenger was a Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon from St Jude Children’s Hospital in Nashville and he said “Most people would be panicking by now but here you are writing a song”, but then that’s just me I guess.
The skies cleared and we flew into Nashville over beautiful green pastures and manicured gardens…..I was pleased that I was held over in Chicago because I had a chance to see Nashville in its daylight beauty.
I was met at the Airport by a lovely young coloured man who located all my luggage that had arrived ahead of me.  He was a happy chappy and danced and sang the whole time I spent with him . He arranged transport for me to “Best Western Hotel” on Music Row, Nashville.  After I settled into my very comfortable room I went for a walk. Then the heavens opened up again and I had to seek refuge in a little Irish Pub close by, (what a sad thing to happen ) I eventually dried out and moved on to a Internet Café nearby and had lunch…..I was made feel so welcome by all there, they wanted me to talk heaps so they could hear my accent……After a lovely lunch of BLT on wheat bread I was beginning to feel a bit weary so I went back to hotel and had the best sleep I have had for years…….
4/5/06
I awoke to a call from Mr Bill Littleton who is a Journalist in Nashville and was Publisher of “Performance” Magazine for 20 years asking me to join him and his wife Connie for his birthday lunch.  We had a lovely Italian meal…..I was picked up from there in a “Lincoln Town Car”and driven to OpryLand for the Grand Tour…..What a great place but it does lack the atmosphere of the Original Grand Ole Opry which is sadly just a tourist site now.  There I caught up with : Bill Anderson, Little Jimmy Dickens, Lorrie Morgan, Ricky Scaggs, Jack Greene & Rhonda Vincent……They are all Grand Ole Opry Stars !!!

I then started to loose my voice as a result of atmospheric changes and talking too much so I thought “Oh No !!! I have to get to Alabama tomorrow …I swallowed about 100 throat lozenges that night and prayed hard….It worked !!!
5/5/06
I was picked up by chauffeur in the “Lincoln” and driven to Alabama to the home of 2 great country stars : Taylor McKay & Hatchett where I spent the next 3 days…….Their home was a beautiful Southern Style Home on acres……Hatchett was Dolly Partons Bass player also…

We all drove to Winchester, Tennessee to perform at The Jamboree by the Lake for 3 days…..
I had a great time there and met artists from all over the world that had travelled to perform there….

The other people that stayed in Alabama with me were Tom Cunningham from Dallas, he was a very interesting person ..He was Mr Texas 1979, Director of TV Series Dallas for 2 years and also Texas’s Top Stunt man for many years and starred in many John Wayne Movies as the Flip Flop Man………The other lady was Weis Boonstra from The Netherlands, She is a DJ over there.
I had a great time at The Jamboree and had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with “Col Buster Doss” from Stardust Records in Nashville, what a legend he is, what he doesn’t know about Country Music is not worth knowing.

While in Winchester I played 3 nights also at “Oasis Honky Tonk”..What a great place, the atmosphere there was electrifying …I worked there with Judge Fletcher, Tim Chesney, Judy Kanyo, Wolf Milestone, Taylor McKay & Hatchett….
8/5/06
We arrived back in Nashville last night very tired but today & tonight I have 4 Gigs in Downtown Nashville:

TOOTSIES: This is the Honky Tonk where Willie Nelson used to be the cleaner……he asked one day if he could sing a song and that’s where it all began…….I had a great time and felt proud to sing there.

LEGENDS CORNER: Alan Jackson sang here when he first arrived in Nashville searching for stardom…What a place with atmosphere +++

SECOND FIDDLE: I was lucky enough for a bus load of Japanese Tourists to arrive while I was playing here…They TIP well…

NASHVILLE CROSSROADS :: What a good show , I played with some of Nashville’s best young muso’s.. They nearly wore me out…
Home to bed at 3.00AM

9/5/06
I spent today in Bayou Studios, Nashville watching Buster Doss produce a recording Session for one of Stardust Recording Artists “Jerri Arnold”. A very interesting time watching The “Master at Work”….I will be doing a recording session here on Saturday..

10/5/06
Nashville Songwriters & recording Artists are holding “Sharing Thoughts’ nights every night this week at the hotel I am staying at so I do not expect to get much sleep this week……I met some interesting people here: Mark Knophler (Dire Straits fame), Grant Boatwright (Willie Nelson, Bruce Springstein & Eric Claptons lead player) to mention a few.. I also met Travis Meadows from Nashville who has written 3 of the songs on Adam Brands new album “ Open Ended heartache, My Boots, & Lucky One”. He told me Adam has not met him yet so I felt very honoured to meet him…….

11/5/06
Went to Green Hills Shopping Mall today, This is where all the stars shop……Caught a glimpse of Gretchen Wilson & Nicole Kidman, they are very unrecognisable after hours….

While I was there I went to the Cheesecake Factory with a group of very hungry musicians and overindulged somewhat….I thought I would not need to eat for at least 6 weeks after the “Strawberry Shortcake”..YUM YUM !!
Staying in tonight ..I think I feel OLD !!!!!!

12/5/06
Played at WILDHORSE SALOON with a Nashville Band which was put together for the show…………….WHAT A GROUP !!
We then went to COYOTE UGLY BAR in Nashville for a meal…..This is a pretty wild venue. A real eye opener……beep beep beep!!

13/5/06
Newspaper Interview for Nashville City Paper with Ron Wynn…
This is the daily newspaper in Nashville

I was told about Nashville’s economy situation.
Nashville does not rely on the music industry for income, it is the printing industry that keeps it afloat by printing 90% of the worlds Bible’s.
It is also the largest growing city after New York because there are no State taxes…..1.7 million people live in Nashville City…

14/5/06
Spent the day at BAYOU Recording Studios in Nashville recording today……Some big names come through here: Tracie Adkins, Alabama etc
My producers were : Bill Littleton & George Clinton

15/5/06
Spent today watching some of Nashville budding young songwriters record some songs at Bayou Studios.. Very entertaining day …Great Talent

16/5/06
I met with songwriter Charlie Masters and his publisher and listened to some of his songs he would like me to record…..Nice songs

I was asked to meet some musco’s tonight at The Hall of Fame Bar and to make sure I turned up ..

When I got there I was in for a WONDERFUL SURPRISE, they had put my picture on the WALL of FAME alongside the likes of Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Hank Locklin, and many other Legends, I was just so excited I cried…….WHAT AN HONOUR !!!!

I said a Sad Goodbye to all my new found friends tonight because I was flying out to TEXAS in the morning…..

17/5/06
Up early for my flight to TEXAS.
I flew to AUSTIN.. then on to HOUSTON…..
From here I went to FORT WORTH..
Then I discovered that my luggage had been left behind in Houston, I thought “NOT AGAIN”.

I had a gig that night at The Stockyards in Fort Worth so had to cancel because I had no guitar and no clothes…..They arrived at Hotel by courier at 1am next morning.
After a bad start things certainly got better:

ALL MY DREAMS HAD COME TRUE …….. TEXAS IS AS CLOSE TO HEAVEN AS YOU CAN GO !!!

The Texans are just beautiful people, so friendly and well mannered.
I think we could take a page out of their book and correct a lot of the things that are wrong in our country.
During the 3 weeks I spent in Texas I did not hear one swear word or raised voice.. We could certainly learn a lot from them I believe.

Every venue I went to had COWBOY CHURCH……The cowboy non-denominational minister would walk in and say “OK Ya”ll church is on out the back, we are gonna do some Prayin’ & Sayin’ and whoever wanted to would go out the back to Church……No obligation at all….and it went for only 30 minutes total…This is a wonderful idea and widely accepted over there.

The people there call everyone Maa’m & Sir, first names are very rarely used , even between husband & wife….The young folk would not walk ahead of you or walk through a doorway without ushering you through and saying “There you go Maa’m”, What a lovely change to some of our young ones.

Before we had a meal we would all join hands and say “Grace “ which was just so nice and very moving….Something we do not see enough of these days I feel…..

NOW THE SHOW BEGINS:
18/5/06
I met up with Jimmy & Jenny Eaves, they are Touring Texan Legends of many years……..We took off on the road and went to some great places;

1. ERNEST TUBBS RECORD STORE- Fort Worth Stockyards,Texas
2. STEPHENVILLE OPRY HOUSE, Stephenville, Texas
3. WESTERN SWING PROCTOR STYLE Proctor, Texas
4. NUMEROUS RADIO STATIONS for INTERVIEWS throughout Texas
5. We went into COMMANCHE Territory in Texas also..

This was a very exciting & exhausting few days and I needed to sleep but as they say in Texas “WE AINT GOIN’ DOWN TILL THE SUN COMES UP”, Boy do they mean what they say over there.

I got back to the Hotel after a very hectic time on the road covering many miles “Deep into the Heart of Texas” and slept for 12 hours non stop…
20/5/06
Back to Stockyards Fort Worth to play at :
ERNEST TUBBS RECORD STORE & WHITE ELEPHANT SALOON
With Jimmy Eaves & Pure Country Band, along with Sonny Christopher
All members of Jimmy Eaves and Pure Country are Grand Ole Opry Stars having played with Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Hank Thompson etc’

In Texas all kids learn to play the Fiddle at school like our kids learn the Recorder. From there they learn other instruments…At least this is constructive, you can’t form a recorder band. All bands have a least 2 fiddles over there sometimes 3 fiddles…..

21/5/06
Back on the road with Jimmy Eaves & Pure Country to places that were just unbelievable………Small communities full of fun and just absolute Country Music Fans……..

Jimmy drives a WHITE CADILLAC so I felt like a SuperStar riding around in the CADDY !!!!!
Not much sleep but LOADS OF FUN……
The Food at Western Swing parties has to be seen to be believed

The whole town cooks and brings along food, most venues are alcohol free so the people do not rely on that to have fun, MUSIC is their thing over there..
COLD TEA is the hardest drink you get in most places in TEXAS…Sweetened or unsweetened…Your choice….

22/5/06
I had to sleep so they let me rest today….Thank God !!!

23/5/06
Went to meet the stars that are appearing at The Memorial Concert for the Troops at STAGECOACH BALLROOM Fort Worth …..
I met the last remaining member of Bob Wills Band, and the remaining members of Hank Thompsons Band….amongst many others…

24/5/06
Went to airport with Jimmy & Jenny Eaves to meet Beth Brown DJ who broadcasts for “ORIGINAL COUNTRY RADIO TEXAS”. Beth is from Canberra . She was a guest at Memorial Concert at Stagecoach Ballroom..

25/5/06
BILLY BOBS TEXAS
This is the Largest Honk Tonk in the World…8.500 people at a time come there…
Beth & I lost control of our senses and rode the mechanical bull there……Bit sore around the butt after this ridiculous decision..
Went to see the beautiful murals painted on the walls of buildings around the Stockyards Complex……

One of these has Jimmy Eaves, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and others outside the Stagecoach Ballroom where they all played many years ago……What a thrill it was to be standing next to and touring with a legend portrayed in these murals…….

26th 27th & 28th May 2006
STAGECOACH BALLROOM – Fort Worth Texas
MEMORIAL WEEKEND CONCERT for the TROOPS.
I worked with many legends of Country Music and upcoming stars:
FREDDIE HART (Easy Lovin”)
NOEL HAGGARD ( Merles Son)
FREDDY POWERS, WAYNE GRAY,SONNY CHRISTOPHER, RONNY ATWOOD, LIZ TALLEY, LARRY SIMPSON, CHARLIE ARNEMANN, RONNIE COLLINS, BRUCE GREAVES (NZ)….and many others

I had the pleasure of having one of TEXAS”S TOP BACKING BANDS behind me in my spots,” THE LONE STAR TEXAS TROUBADOURS”.What a wonderful dream that was, I finally got to work with a band that had “TWIN TEXAS FIDDLES”…..I thought I had died and gone to Heaven……

Sadly this weekend had to end. We all said our GOOD-BYES through a few tears of joy and vowed to keep our friendships alive forever through emails etc….And YES , I did learn to do the TEXAS TWO STEP…….

My tour is almost over but I could not go home without watching the LONGHORNS run through FORT WORTH…. What a site to see, We think our cattle are big, you should see these big guys……..They wanted me to ride one but that was bit ambitious so I just had a photo taken with them instead.

After a lovely lunch with Jimmy & Jenny Eaves & Beth Brown it was time for me to go……….SAD BUT TRUE, I was on my way to the DALLASS/FORT WORTH AIRPORT………..The Memories will live on ……As George Strait sings “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind” It certainly will because I had the pleasure of attending his TEXAS CONCERT in Dallas while I was there and if I never live to see another miracle happen it was his show outdoors under the TEXAS stars with the Texan & American Flags flying in the nightime breeze and listening to George Strait sing his songs about Texas , his home state…..

I Left TEXAS wearing a beautiful Red Hat because as they say in TEXAS..”HAPPINESS IS A RED HAT”
GOD BLESS, TEXAS, TENNESSEE & ALABAMA and I Thank God & my understanding, caring husband for the opportunity to take this incredible journey………………….
Yours in Country Style,

I had the pleasure of judging the Talent Quest at Bombala last weekend, presented by Bombala Country Music Assoc...What a great lot of Junior Talent. It is very rewarding to see these kids and look at the "Stars of the Future"..One young lady that really stood out was "Katrina Lee Goldstraw". What a great young artist, I think we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future....I can remember saying the same thing about "Travis Collins & Jason Lee" when I first judged them many years ago.......
You take care ......Patti McKinnon

I have just been told I will be playing Austin, Dallas & Fort Worth when I go to USA in May.....That is
"REAL COWBOY TERRITORY"...Sounds like fun!!! Regards Patti McKinnon

Hello Helen, I am sorry I missed you in Tamworth..It is a big place when you are looking to find someone.....I am over the moon because the "Cold Weather,,Hot Country Music"album on the Stardust Label arrived from Nashville last week and they have included my song "Just Waiting for you" . I am receiving airplay in Texas, Austria, Holland & many other countries already... This is really exciting as I share a spot on the album with Johnny Cash"s brother Tommy Cash and the new kid on the block in Nashville "Troy Cook"..I will also be sharing the stage with these great artists when I go to Tennessee in May..I have been told I am also going to do a show in Austin ,Texas while I am over there....It will be hard to come home to "Dullsville" .......Country Wishes Patti McKinnon

Big Thank you to Patti from Dianne Hammond
My name is Dianne Hammond. I am a presenter of country music at 2WKT Highland FM 107.1  in Mittagong and 2GCR 103.3 in Goulburn.  This weekend Patti McKinnon held a concert at the Railway Bowling club on Saturday night to launch her new cd Freedom Highway. On Sunday she held the exact same concert again to help raise funds for a little boy called Jack. The concert was called just for Jack. This little boy had a liver transplant at 7 months old, he is now 2 and needs ongoing medical help.  It was my pleasure to attend this concert and a big Thank you must go to Patti for putting on the concert. The band for the whole weekend was the Jason Lee band and what a great performance they put on.   Joining the band during the afternoon was Roo Arcus, Norm McMillan, Tina Llambias and of course Patti McKinnon. The 2 shows were compered by Bill Beerens. Bill is a radio presenter for Good morning Country on the CBAA . The afternoon was packed with great music, raffles and WIRES provided afternoon tea. I had a most enjoyable afternoon and I hope it was successful in raising some money to help little Jack. I wish Jack all the best with his future treatment.
Thanks for your time
Dianne Hammond

My CDs arrived from Cable Productions today.......Launch on the weekend so I will take some pics and send them to you. I had a call tonight to say all the Cable Cubby Team are coming to Tamworth. LOOK OUT!!!!!!!

Patti McKinnon's album in time for her launch and they are thrilled with the results. She had the great pleasure of using Kirk Steel's wonderful keyboard talent on this CD (One of Helen from Ragepage's favourite entertainers).

Info on Jack Webster
Fundraiser 25th September
Jack Webster is now 2 years old. He was born with the same genentic condition that tragically took the life of his 17 month old brother Cody. When Jack was 7 months old he was given a liver transplant that has given him a better quality life but he still needs ongoing medical attention and expensive medication.
The "JUST FOR JACK" fundraiser was set up to help with these ongoing costs.

Hi Helen, Just a quick note to let you know that I was honoured to be a guest at Travis Collins's Album Launch at Sweeneys last Friday night. What a great night it was. I was a very proud "Music" Mum because I took Travis to his 1st Talent Quest when he was 11 years old at Ilabo. He managed to be the Overall Winner and has not looked back since . I was also proud that my other "Music Kid" Jason-Lee was the support act along with his fiance Linda Barnes singing wonderful backing harmonies. Jason also is a young man I am very proud of and Linda is a great artist in her own right, having written some beautiful songs that many artists have recorded. It was a very proud evening for me to see these young talented people all together on the one show. I am extremely proud of all three of them....I was also pleased to meet Alan & Trish Skeed. They are both great people......
Regards Patti

Patti was born in September 1947 and is proud to be called a "Baby Boomer" her childhood was spent on a sheep & wheat station at Trungley Hall near Temora NSW.   It was there working alongside with her Dad & Grandfather she developed a love of Country Music. Her Dad was great mates with our legendary mate Reg Lindsay. Reg & Dad shared with her their talents and this was her inspiration. The family moved to Fairfield NSW to enable the kids to complete school and find jobs in the city but Patti always missed the bush. Her Dad took her to venues around the suburbs and she met great people like Lonnie Lee, Laurel Lee, Digby Richards, Johnny O"Keefe, The Allen Brothers (Peter Allen) and many others. She began singing a little bit on their shows but realised it was Country Music she loved the most. By this time she had commenced a nursing career training in Forensic, Cardiac & Pathology nursing. In the midst of all this she started riding in Rodeos and met some Country singers, Lee Brittain, Cowboy Bob Purtell, Cazna & the legendary Gordon Parsons.  She heard about a bloke called Bill Kelly and went to one of his shows and that is where it all began. He introduced her to many a great Country Artist and they would ask her up on stage at their shows.  She formed her own band "Freedom Highway" under the musical directorship of Greg Parsons and they soon became one of the most sought after bands on the Country Music Scene. After Greg passed away she lost a lot of her inspiration and the band slowly drifted apart. She then decided to pursue her truck driving ambitions and began driving the "Big Rigs" on the interstate runs. She always had the guitar on board and played at almost all the country pubs and roadhouses she stopped at along the way. After a few years she decided she needed some "Normality" in her life and resumed her nursing career but she missed her music. She played at nursing homes and many a charitable event. There was still a lot of energy so she concentrated on the "Kids", Travis Collins & Jason Lee to name a couple. She took Travis to his first talent quest at Illabo and he was the Overall Winner.
She currently works in a Rural Medical Practice near Goulburn NSW where she and her husband Tony have a grazing property & lavender farm.
Her new album "Freedom Highway" came as a complete surprise. She was ready to hang the guitar on the wall when she received a call from Cable Productions in Cairns Nth Qld asking if she would accept a recording offer from them. She thought about it for about 60 seconds and decided it didn't matter that she was 58 years old and the Grandmother of 14. 'Lets Do It" she said.
The album has some great tracks on it and some songs that the Producer surprised her with because he was the boss and had the final choice of material. There are 3 of Patti's own songs on it.
