- 2004 Summary
Sensationally successful. That was the opinion of
the vast majority of music lovers who arrived in Tamworth for their
annual pilgrimage to the undisputed Country Music Capital of Australia.
Tamworth provided everything from thunder and lightning, drought
breaking rain, plenty of sunshine, great food outlets, public transport
aplenty, thirst quenching liquids and a feast of world class music at
venues all over town. It was lovely to see the reunions of friends
that only meet each year at the January festival and the many new
friendships formed that look forward to next years event to meet again.
When asked, it is hard to pinpoint which was the best gig attended or
artist in particular as the quality of talent is just so good.
With the mixture of veteran artists, muso's in their prime and the crop
of extremely talented juniors all providing knee slapping, hand
clapping, toe tapping music for all tastes. Even the most astute
music critics were smiling. A special congratulations must go to the
City of Tamworth leaders for getting behind this festival and they can
be very proud of the locals for going about their every day chores with
a happy smile and a kind word for everybody. All things
considered, this festival was sensationally successful.

Sara Storer broke all previous Toyota Golden Guitar Awards
records tonight when she took home an unprecedented seven of the 13
awards up for grabs at Australian country music's biggest night, the
2004 Toyota Country Music Awards in Tamworth, Australia's Country
Music Capital.
Sara won Album of the Year for Beautiful Circle, only her second
release, produced by Garth Porter; Female Vocalist of the Year with
the album's title track, Heritage Song of the Year with Drovers Call
and Bush Ballad of the Year with Boss Drover's Pride, both her own
songs.
Then, with Garth Porter and her brother Doug Storer, she won APRA Song
of the Year for the hit Raining On The Plains. That made five and
equalled the record set by Lee Kernaghan in 1999 when he won five
Golden Guitars from his successful Hat Town album.
To top off the night and break Lee's record, Sara also took home
awards for Vocal Collaboration of the Year and the new Single of the
Year category with her duet recording of Raining On The Plains with
John Williamson whose Golden Guitar tally now stands at 20, the second
highest after Slim Dusty.
A delighted and gracious Sara was somewhat overwhelmed with her
awards. The hottest new star of Australian country music graduated
from the CMAA College of Country Music four years ago after winning a
talent quest in the Northern Territory where she was working as a
teacher. Sara won the New Talent Golden Guitar in 2001.
Four time Golden Guitar winner Adam Harvey added another trophy to his
cabinet when he was announced as Male Vocalist of the Year with the
song Call it Love from his Cowboy Dreams album.
Bella, the new all-girl trio of Kate Ballantyne, Lyn Bowtell and Karen
O'Shea, won the Golden Guitar for Vocal Group of the Year with their
recording of Tumbling Down, while Trev Warner took out Instrumental of
the Year for Peel Street Pickin'. Trev last won a Golden Guitar in
1979 with Dennis Siddall as Trev & Dennis.
New signing to the Compass Bros label Dianna Corcoran won New Talent
of the Year with I'll Fly Away while Graeme Connors took home the
Golden Guitar for Telstra Video Clip of the Year with The Simple Truth
(directed by Tom Spark).
Keith Urban's Golden Road won the coveted Top Selling Album of the
Year award.
The 32nd annual Toyota Country Music Awards of Australia, this year
dedicated to the memory of Slim Dusty, were presented in front of a
capacity audience at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre.
