Newcastle teenage Country Music entertainer JOSH CANNING has had his obvious song writing talents recognised in the results of the USA based International Song Writing Competition.

Josh entered 4 songs in the Country and Teen sections and has been rewarded by having 2 of his songs placed in both categories.

Results are as follows:
OPEN TEEN CATEGORY…………SEMI FINALIST with his composition “THERE’S YOU”.
OPEN TEEN CATEGORY…………RUNNER UP TO WINNER with his composition “CROOKED SMILE”.
OPEN COUNTRY CATEGORY…..HONORABLE MENTION (places 3 to 6) again with “CROOKED SMILE”.
Apart from the recognition, Josh will collect a selection of merchandise to help improve his quest for a career in his chosen field of entertainment.

This competition was truly international with over 11,000 entries from 60 countries. There were 68 winners in 13 categories who shared over $100,000 (USD) in cash and merchandise. Josh was the only entrant to be recognised in 2 fields and for him to be rewarded with placings in both sections that he entered with songs that he wrote when he was 17 years old is quite an achievement.

Central Coast Road to Tamworth heat

Telstra Country Wide Road to Tamworth competition.

Newcastle teenage Country Music artist Josh Canning has taken out the Central Coast heat of the Telstra Country Wide Road to Tamworth competition. The event held last Saturday at the Telstra shop at Westfield Tuggerah attracted 15 Country Music hopefuls.

Telstra Central Coast business manager Cheryl Taylor said she was stunned by the high quality of the performers.

  Each 10 minute performance, where it was just the artist and their guitar, was recorded and the tapes were sent to Sydney booking agency Allied Artists for adjudication.   Allied Artists marketing director Rosemarie Els said the prize money was designed to assist with expenses when Josh attends the 2004 Telstra Country Music in Tamworth.

 There are plans to develop the Telstra Road to Tamworth contest throughout regional Australia

 Josh collected a cool $1,000.00 for his efforts.

Jedi Josh joins Star force

Josh Canning will hang up his guitar and pick up a light sabre for his role as a Jedi Knight in the next instalment of Star Wars.    The 18 year old country crooner will not put his cowboy boots away yet, but he is excited about acting beside stars such as Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman.

"When I got off the phone after being told I had been chosen my hands were shaking,"  he said.  Director George Lucas had looked at photos of hundreds of acting hopefuls, but settled on Mr. Canning.

He is no stranger to performance.   Despite growing up in Charlestown, far from the open road that usually inspires country singers, he has released a debut album and continues to perform at weekly country music round-up at the Maitland Ex-services Club.

Graphic Action Comics owner James Morris, who has his own Star Wars light sabre, said gossip on the internet was all ready speculating about the 3rd Star Wars.    "Well, the gossip is that Chewy (Chewbacca) is in it this time and the fans are hoping Hans Solo will be there," Mr Morris said.   

Mr. Canning or Jedi Josh as his mates will no doubt call him, will need to get his swashbuckling skills up to scratch before tje August start date.

Country Singer JOSH

Newcastle born and raised JOSH CANNING has been selected as a Jedi Knight extra in the upcoming movie STAR WARS 3.
The 18 year old country music singer/songwriter/guitarist and now actor was recently chosen from the books of Sydney company MODELSFILMTV.COM by none other than producer/writer GEORGE LUCAS.
Early production has now started at Sydney’s FOX STUDIOS and Josh has to attend a wardrobe fit out early next month. Between now and then he has to brush up on his sword fighting ability and will be taking lessons from DEVERIK WILLIAMS. Williams was the tutor charged with the duty of teaching ZENA and cast their skills.
Producer RICK McCALLUM says the production will spend more than $50 million dollars in NSW and employ about 60 actors. Josh is looking forward to the excitement of the set and watching and learning from actors including EWAN McGREGOR and SAMUEL L JACKSON.
You may remember Josh recently released his debut Country Music CD. He has since moved to Sydney in a bid to further his career but still returns to Newcastle on a regular basis.
On most visits he can be seen performing at the weekly Country Music round-up on Wednesday nights at the MAITLAND EX-SERVICES CLUB.

Newcastle teenager Josh Canning delivers four diverse tracks in a very promising debut. He’s been taken under the wings of Central Coast-based alt-country legends, Bill Chambers and Audrey Auld. While the unmistakable trademarks of the Chambers clan are clearly audible on this release, Josh writes the songs and contributes a self-assured vocal performance of his own making. There are no American accents here. Josh just belts out his songs naturally without worrying too much what Nashville might think.

Not Strong Enough opens the batting, propelled by the ringing, shimmering guitar interplay between Glen Hannah and Bill Chambers. Canning’s vocals are strong yet sensitive, not unlike those of Kevin Montgomery (as reviewed in a previous issue of CPQ). Gorgeous harmony vocals are provided on this track by Amy Cruickshank. Elsewhere, Rob Wilson, Audrey Auld and Bill Chambers provide a little vocal backup.

Crooked Smile has a classic Chambers family feel, with beautiful fiddle and the patented haunting sound of Bill’s dobro. Sweet Talkin’ Daddy sees Josh stray into honky tonk territory, and he handles it with style and confidence. The closing track, There’s You shows a more tender side of Josh Canning, resigned to young-love-gone-wrong while the fiddle and steel guitar weep accordingly.

First Catherine Britt, now Josh Canning. There must be something in that Hunter River water, a secret ingredient that’s helping develop such talented teenagers up Newcastle way. Let’s hope Josh and Catherine can continue to develop their own sounds without falling in with the slick and glossy crowd! I wish them every commercial success, but I hope it can be on their own terms. (AC)

There are not many young artists that you’d dare call “an old hand” but Newcastle teenager JOSH CANNING is the rare exception. Performing since the tender age of 7 Josh has travelled the country winning hearts with his pure country singing and dynamic guitar picking. Add to this Josh’s good looks, quick wit and genuine love of traditional country music and you have the makings of a star on the rise.

 Josh is fast becoming a name within the Sydney/Australian country music scene and is a regular member of the Bill Chambers band playing with some of Australia’s top musicians including Mick Albeck, Michelle Rose, Glen Hannah and Simon Johnson.

 Josh has recently recorded his debut CD under the co-production of Bill Chambers and Audrey Auld. Josh is described by Bill as “the next big thing” and with all originals on the CD he is displaying his obvious song writing ability.

 International singer/songwriter Wayne Hancock recently invited Josh to join him on stage during his recent tour, highlighting Josh’s growing reputation. Josh also co-ordinates a Country Youth Showcase at the Central Coast Country Music festival.

 He graduated from the inaugural Tamworth Camerata music school, culminating in his comparing of his group’s graduation concert. Josh plays weekly at the highly acclaimed Horseshoe Bend Roundup at Maitland.

 Josh is devoting all his time to a musical career and constantly looking for somewhere to perform. He is available with or without band and contactable on 0414 474108.
