Kim Cheshire's Suburban Voodoo is
Kim Cheshire: Acoustic Guitar/ Vocals (Danglin Bros, The Wheel)

Michael King: Electric and Acoustic Guitar/Vocals (Danglin' Bros,
Jimmy Barnes, James Blundell, Absent Friends, Wendy Matthews, Richard
Clapton, James Reyne, Lee Kernaghan and on and on and on......
Roni Francois:
Bass/Guitar/Vocals ( Lena Lovich, Teardrop Explodes, Eurogliders,
Wendy Matthews, James Reyne and more)
Garry Steel: Piano/Organ/Accordion ( John Williamson, Slim Dusty,
Pixie Jenkins, Broderick Smith, Jimmy Barnes, Lee Kernaghan, Graham
Connors and more)
Laurie Ernst: Drums/Percussion/Vocals ( Broderick Smith, Coloured
Stone, Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges (USA) bluesman. Mick Taylor (Rolling
Stones) Vennetta Fields, Matt Walker and more)
Since disbanding King Horse in March 2003 I stopped performing live in
order to set up Ocean Road Music, a publishing company and eventually
a record label with partners Rod McCormack and Doug Trevor. As
this is going to be taking up a large portion of my time from now on,
I decided that live work is going to have to be just a few select
things. I started thinking that, as well as planning to record a
follow up to "Rocking Horse To Mars", which I intend to start soon,
another thing I'd really like to continue to do is play at the
Tamworth Hotel at festival time, along with my friends The Flood and
The Margharitas.
During the last couple of years I've been playing the occasional gig
with Mick King (guitar/vocals) and Roni Francois (bass/guitar/vocals)
and we've wondered what we might sound like with a couple more
players, we play a variety of blues, country, reggae, R&B, original
songs, obscure lost gems, things you think you might have heard before
but can't remember where................
So I set about seeing if we could put a good band together, deciding
first to call my favourite drummer in Australia, Laurie Ernst.
I'd met Laurie a few years back when he was playing with Broderick
Smith and I really liked him and just loved his playing, so he was my
first choice, unfortunately he lives in Cairns, but a short telephone
call and an enthusiastic Laurie was in. The other person I've
wanted to work with for a long time is one of my neighbours here,
Keyboard and master Accordion player Garry Steel, Garry lives just
down the road from my place, we hang out a bit (mostly shed talk!) and
Garry came and jammed with us at the last King Horse gig and it made
me think that I'd really love to play some music with him sometime.
So a brief conversation with Garry and he was in too, it was that
easy!
I can't really describe the sound other than say "it's suburban and
it's voodoo" Nah, I'm kidding!! I reckon if you like what I've
done in the past and you aren't offended by the fact I like to play a
variety of roots styles rather than stay strictly to country then I
think you'll love it! We'll have four singers in the band, so
we'll have great harmonies, Roni will also sing some lead vocals, even
Mick promises to sing one, a funky rhythm section (and I don't mean we
are going to sound like Kool and The Gang) great interplay between
Mick King and Garry Steel and a selection of the best material we
could write or find to create an entertaining and musically
stimulating experience.
Hi there Helen! Good to
hear from you! Unfortunately I don't have anything too exciting to
report this time. I have been putting a new band, "Kim Cheshire's
Suburban Voodoo" together for Tamworth, but due to my other business
commitments with Ocean Road I've decided to keep the live stuff down
to the festival and a couple of other gigs, one in Sydney and one on
the Central Coast and I will post the dates on my website when they
are locked in. As for the festival we will be playing at
the Tamworth Hotel from Wed 21 to Sat 24th. I will also be doing a
spot at the "Writers In The Round" at the Services Club at 10.00 -
11.30 in the morning on Wednesday 21st.

Hi again Helen! Sorry about
the lack of info and gigs, I appreciate your interest in me, but the
truth is I haven't been playing any gigs. I disbanded "King Horse" a
few months back, it was just getting a little tired and uninspired and
time for a change and have been busy with other things. I have
actually been involved with Rod McCormack and Doug Trevor putting
together a publishing company "Ocean Road Music" and I've been over in
Nashville with Rod, setting up deals for that. We ran into all the
usual suspects, Keith was out of town playing in Kentucky and doing
the CMA's but we caught up with Jed Hughes and Catherine Britt who
both have major deals and are busy writing material for their albums,
actually they were both writing (although separately) with Guy Clark
while we were there, and they were both great, a little homesick but
both well. Kym Warner and Carol Young came over from Austin to stay
with us for a couple of days, they are about to start recording an
album with their band The Greencards, we had lots of fun going out to
see great music and playing some of our own, they are both well, happy
and busy playing lots of gigs.
Simon Bruce, I don't know if you know of Simon he's a fantastic
Australian songwriter (he's not country, more folk-rock) he is my
prediction for major success, he has no record deal as yet but has a
publishing deal and is being looked after by the people who manage
Emmylou Harris/Lyle Lovett/John Hiatt and Patty Griffin so he's in
pretty good company, he's been out playing gigs with John Hiatt around
New York.
He had his 18th birthday while we were there so we had a small party
for him with all the Aussies, and Rod did a few gigs playing guitar
with him, and I did some vocal harmonies. As for business it was a
very worthwhile trip, we set up a variety of deals that will be a
great start for our new company.
Nashville was warm and sunny, and the vibe was friendly and
accommodating as always. Musically it was very disappointingly
un-country, (particularly the CMA's which we watched there) at this
time, there's a hell of a lot of pop/rock fluff dressed up as country
(I won't mention any names, we all know who the culprits are) actually
the Australians are the closest thing to real country music there
right now............well, apart from the perennials like George
Strait, George Jones and Alan Jackson etc and then there's that awful
patriotic crap like Daryl Worley's "Have You Forgotten" and Toby
Keith's "Red White and Blue" along with an over abundance of "God
Loves America" flags and bumper stickers.
They did a survey while I was there and discovered that 70% of the
American public thinks that Saddam Hussein was responsible for the
twin towers explosion, now that's scary!! Propaganda rules the
TV/Radio airwaves there that's for sure.
God bless The Dixie Chicks!!!........... they can think for themselves
and they play real country music, may they rule the
world!........well, along with Kasey!
Print out and have
the memories
