WANTED MAN, the debut
solo album from Dave Gleeson, is a collection of heartfelt and very
personal songs; songs both autobiographical and analytical of life and
relationships.
“ Everyone has a multi faceted personality”,
Gleeson says, “these songs weren’t written and recorded to change
anybody’s world, more to give me a chance to explore some of the other
facets of my own”.
Recorded during the first weeks
of 2002, the album has been a long time in the making for the sometimes
outspoken Screaming Jets frontman.
“I’ve been writing and
collecting songs over the last few years, songs that never really suited
the Jets, so I just left them on the backburner until I had the time and
resources to record them exactly as I wanted”. Best described as
‘rootsy with country overtones’, the album contains songs written
by Gleeson, as well as by other artists, two by Melbourne
singer/songwriter Brent Parlane (who also collaborated with Gleeson on
other tracks) and one by Kris Kristofferson. The songs range from moody
ballads of loves and lives lost, to songs for good ol’ boys in smoky
bars and meant for singing in loud beer soaked voices.
“My influences are many and
varied, and I think albums should be able to display a diversity, so as
not to show the artist as one dimensional or some kind of a one trick
pony”.
Gleeson enlisted the talents of his good friend
and one time Screaming Jets guitarist, Jimi Hocking, to help him with the project. “ It was great to work with Jimi again, we
have been best of friends since we first toured together, and he has
always encouraged me to do some solo stuff. I wrote the songs and he just
kind of glued the band and everything together around that”.
