Greetings Floodjunkers!
Spring looms, Magpies are swooping, roses are being pruned, the dead leaves and frogs are being scooped from the backyard pool, and your fave ‘roots’ band is relishing the thrill of an ARIA nomination, HEAPS of upcoming gigs, and the release of our new radio single ‘2003’!! Let’s get straight down to it:
ARIA NOMINATION
Yep, The Late Late Show has been announced as nominee for Best Blues and Roots Album at the 2006 ARIA Awards, to be held on Oct 29th. We’re very happy about this, as I’m sure many of you are too. Stiff competition for this one, but with a Golden Guitar, a MO Award in the bag already this year and nomination in the CMAA Achievers Awards in September as well as the ARIA nomination, it’s already been a pretty good year for Awards! Thanks to you people for your part in taking The Flood to a wider audience. http://www.ariaawards.com.au/winners-nominees-2006.php

EAST BRUNSWICK CLUB
This is another show with Melinda Schneider – and big thanks to her for taking us all over Australia with her – she’s a diamond and a big Flood-victim herself. Looking forward to getting back to the Brunnie so soon, and we’re hoping the usual troupe of Melbourne Floodites turn out. Melinda is launching her new album (her best yet) - ‘Stronger’ - for the Melbourne audience at this show, and The Flood get to bang out a decent set beforehand too! Don’t miss it – we won’t make it to Melbourne again this year.

MAILORDERS
If you’ve sent through a mail order in recent times, you’ll have noticed that we’re a bit slow in responding at times! We always get to them eventually, but this li'l ol’ independent band can’t afford staff, so we’re at the mercy of other commitments and time-permitting. We hope you’ll be understanding, and we’re always trying to get through them faster than we do. If you REALLY get peeved – try your local CD shop, and hound them for it! They SHOULD have it in stock, and they can get it from SONY/BMG if not – which is why we couldn’t enter Best Independent Group at the ARIAS, by the way! Phooey…

ITUNES
We’re at the itunes website too – which is way cool if you’re one of those funky young things with a white box that plays 30,000 inferior-quality low-samplerate MP3s while you’re paragliding in the Andes….!

That’s about it for now. Don’t forget to check out the updated gig list on the website in about 24 hours or so.

PS: Scottie Hills – Flood drummer extraordinaire and youngest Flood member is going to become a dad for the first time. I’m sure you’ll all join us in congratulating him and his partner Catherine and wishing them all the best. Scott will look good with baby vomit-stains down his back, I’m sure….Looking forward to the drummer they produce – Steve Gadd look out…

We’d love to sign off with a Karl Broadie-esq pearl of wisdom, but it’s too late, and he’s too good at it, so: C YA RILL SOON!

Because of an all in brawl last night in the crowd they had to
stop midway through the second half.  A bouncer and
a guy started punching each other, then some other guys
ran in and it was on for young and old.
Kevin was on the stage going "hey guys, take it easy, it's Easter"...then
he said "walk away...walk away".

Floodjunk News
March 2006

In this issue:
· The Flood get the gong at Tamworth
· The Flood get the gong at the MO Awards
· Steve Fearnley where are you???
· New Drummer: Scott Hills

· ‘Hello Blue Sky’ inch-ing up the charts…
· New album: ‘The Late Late Show’ running out the door fast, but still plenty clogging up our spare rooms…!
· Dates, Dates, Dates…
Golden Guitars
If you don’t know already you’ve probably been on another planet, but The Flood finally cracked it at Tamworth and picked up the 2006 CMAA Golden Guitar for Group Of The Year. We don’t make albums to win awards, but there couldn’t be four happier ‘campers’ in the world. Returning to the Tamworth Hotel after the Awards Show, sporting trophies and grins from ear to ear – gonna be hard to ever top that. Thanks to all you folks who were there – in the flesh, AND in spirit…
MO Awards
KB built a new shelf to house his much loved GG trophy, and just as well he did, because there’s another on the way for Best Country Group, as announced at the recent MO awards (for excellence in entertainment).
ARIA Awards
We’ve never won one of these…
Steve ‘Sticks’ Fearnley – ex-drummer
Probably about time we shed some light on the absence of old-mate Steve. Playing drums in rock bands ain’t the most lucrative profession in the world, and Steve’s got another profession and a life, and a family. Band was getting too busy and demanding too much time, too much travel, too many late nights and Steve – of his own volition – decided ‘enough’ was ‘way too much’. Never easy, and we didn’t want him to go – but we still love him, and he’s a bloody great drummer….
Scott Hills – new drummer
So Scott joined the band, did a couple of gigs at Tamworth and five minutes later was being interviewed about his new Golden Guitar! We found Scott wandering around Broadbeach in a stupor with his young mates during schoolies week 2005, and offered him a gig. Scott is great. Scott got the nod from Steve as ‘the best drummer he’s heard in ages’. We love Scott too. How lucky are we?
Hello Blue Sky
KB’s little 3-minute wonder is proving our most successful single ever. It’s currently at #2 on the Country Tracks Airplay charts and has spent 13 weeks in the top 30 so far. If you keep requesting it, we just may give #1 a nudge…???

The clip also made #1 and is getting a great run on CMC – and you can request it there, at: http://www.countrymusicchannel.com.au/requests.asp

New Album – The Late Late Show
It’s available on the website by mail order, and you can even audition each track - if you feel the need. You can also get it from loads of good stores, and from our good mates at HMV (thanks Pete) – especially online at www.hmv.com.au  (Only $27.99 too!)

So far the reviews are all good:
"Sublime....exquisite....to die for....It's a triumph of combining great
songwriting and a thinking man's conscience with one of Australia's greatest
singers and it burns deep into your soul" Kim Cheshire - Country Update Magazine, March 2006

The Flood walk a wide path through the country/blues and roots genres with well crafted, melodic songs led by Kevin Bennett’s superb lyrics and exquisite vocals.

Recently honoured with the Golden Guitar for 2006 Vocal Group of the Year (Hello Blue Sky) and the Mo Award for Country Band, The Flood are back on the road with a new album, The Late Late Show.

The Flood – Kevin Bennett, James Gillard, Tim Wedde and Steve Fearnley
The Flood’s welcome return to The Basement venue in Sydney last June was recorded by ABC TV for the Live at the Basement series and screened nationally on the 25th October.

The 2nd appearance on Live at the Basement showcased new material from singer/songwriter Kevin Bennett (written for the next album to be released in early 2006) and reinforces The Flood’s reputation as our finest organic roots band.

The Flood’s performance included the latest single “Hello Blue Sky”, “Mayday”, “2003”, “Welcome to the Undertow” and “Moon Going Down” along with previous hits “Paul Kelly’s Blues”, “Australian For Broken Heart” and perennial favourite “Tear Stained Eye”.

The single will be available at our website order page very soon, so get in now (it’ll fit that xmas stocking beautifully, and at only $10 is a little pressie your friends will love you for!)
New Album

Greetings Floodites!
Thanks to everyone who came to The Basement last week. It was a great night, and we should have another ABC special in the can for the next series of ‘Live At The Basement’.

The DIG Launch gig a couple of weeks back was great – thanks for coming out and helping us rock our ‘proverbials’ off! There are now some pics from the gig on the DIG website: http://www.abc.net.au/dig/stories/s1346213.htm
Keep an eye on DIG Country for some audio streaming of the gig in coming weeks.
Hope you can make it to one of this weekend’s gigs!

Greetings Floodites!
Just a quick update. Sometimes five minutes after we announce something the wind changes direction and dates shift! Last week was no exception, so here are the corrections:
Live at The Basement
Yes, last week’s announcement was a false alarm, and the Live at The Basement special was re-scheduled for this Tuesday, April 12! So if you thought you missed it - you didn’t!
The 2002 Kevin Welch & The Flood, Live at The Basement special will be repeated this Tuesday night at 11pm on ABC TV. If you still don’t have the ‘Plenty of Time’ DVD this show will give you taster of what you are missing. If you get your VCR/Recordable DVD fired-up, don’t forget the DVD has MORE songs and MORE extras than the TV special, such as the clip for Paul Kelly’s Blues.
PS: Steve Fearnley met Willie Green (legendary Neville Brothers’ drummer). Willie Green loves Steve Fearnley – funny that – so do we! Willie Green had a whack on Steve Fearnley’s drum kit at soundcheck. Willie Green’s now swaggering around the world in a fabo Flood t-shirt, and Steve Fearnley is working out whether to use Willie’s personalised drum sticks as tomato stakes or have them mounted in the enormous Steve Fearnley trophy room, along with his junior golf title in the Inverell Under 15 Open! Willie said Steve should get up and have a blow with the Neville Bros. Steve high-tailed it to the nearest bar!

Also available as a DVD through www.theflood.com.au    and www.kevinwelch.com , Plenty of Time features 16 honestly composed and beautifully rendered songs in the best traditions of organic roots music plus bonus footage of music clips.

Greetings Floodites!
Well it’s hard to believe, but we are already six weeks into 2005! With this year’s Tamworth Festival well and truly behind us, it’s time to keep you posted with what The Flood are up to! But before we go into that we’d like to thank everybody who came and supported the shows in Tamworth. It was easily the best festival yet for The Flood and as KB said a couple of times during the week, we believe that our audience is the best one at the festival! Listening intently during the quiet songs, rocking-out in the others, and easily the nicest, most musically astute bunch of people in town – thanks!
Highlights this year included the astonishing stage invasion and guitar heroics of young Dan from The Baileys – a truly inspired moment – on the Friday night, and the amazing reception for the Peeling, Carruthers and Young trio from Melbourne, who shone in the 5-8pm slot. ‘P,Y,C’ are threatening to return in 2006, and judging by the warm reception they received, we’d better watch our backs!
For those who weren’t able to be there, maybe this letter from songwriter supremo and Flood-friend Karl Broadie to his brother might set the scene for you:
(with the kind permission of Karl Broadie Esq!!)

Karl Broadie
24th Jan 2005
Letter to his brother.
Hey Bro,
All's good this end. Tamworth was AMAZING!

The Flood play in the best venue up there - amphitheatre style beer garden, stage framed by bamboo and ferns, great night lights and the best soundman & PA in Tamworth (as you'd hope for with the best band and best songs). Clear nights with a great view of the moon & stars from wherever you are in the garden. Magic.

It's the place to be in Tamworth, at a Flood gig. All the stars, media, radio folks and record industry go most nights (they play most nights of the Festival). Last year Paul Kelly got on stage with them and left me breathless. On Thursday night last week (my 3rd Flood gig of the week) Greggy G and I had played a very pleasing gig that evenin' and were looking forward to The Flood all day. Warm night with an easy breeze, cool beers and a packed venue. The Tamworth Hotel beer garden should be used in Hollywood movies. Aesthetically it's stunning and has the friendliest kinda energy you could hope for when people gather in their hundreds. With Kevin Bennett as skipper, how could it be anything but the friendliest kinda energy in HIS venue (there's a plaque on the roof of the stage that reads "the Kevin Bennett stage") KB, the REAL "KB" as Greggy G put it so well "is fulla love and shares it all around". Anyway, none of this comes close to capturing the atmosphere on these nights. The very same atmosphere I'd remembered from last year's Tamworth. YES it does come around again!

And so, if Paul Kelly fronting The Flood last year, with Troy Casser-Daley on lead guitar doing All Along The Watchtower was my highlight of Tamworth 2004, then my highlight this year was (and I don't feel worthy!) myself fronting The Flood with Greggy G on Drums in an almighty version of "It Lasts" from my new album. The real KB, Kevin Bennett, whippin' up the wind (and the crowd) with his backing vocals and gritty telecaster solo, puttin' flesh on the bones of a song I'm so very proud of. Tim Wedde's soaring Hammond was the horizon opening up and burstin' through - James Gillard on Bass was the warm sun - Greggy G on drums made certain the terrain was steady yet eventful (we had to hold on man!) - me....I was alive and I knew it.

Kasey Chambers joined The Flood the night after. We joined them again on Saturday night and incredibly, we relived the magic.
Good times bro, too much beer, way too many bourbons, way, way too many cigarettes but feelin' on top o' the world.
Loadsy Love
Karl
Thank-you Karl!

And another Tamworth done and dusted. But never fear, you needn’t wait til 2006 to see KB and his merry band (well, one or two of them are ‘merry’) in action! There are more shows coming up, and they are detailed below. But first, a few titbits!

New Album
The Flood are in new-album mode, and will be recording a new studio CD in coming months. Release date is still to be determined as there is still some strategic planning to be done. However, if you think we’re being a tad quiet, that’ll be why. Meanwhile, check out the gigs to hear the odd sneak preview of KB’s new ‘ditties’! And please be patient – it COULD be a while before we release this new one.

T-Shirts
The (new) ‘Australian For Broken Heart’ t-shirts are still available in all sizes – but be quick – they are rushing out the door. These shirts continue The Flood tradition of quality t-shirts you can happily wear in public! Order via the online order form at: www.theflood.com.au

Greetings Floodites!
Watch out for a new studio album in 2005. We’re busting to get in there and make a whole new racket for you!
New T-Shirts!
We have some new ‘Australian For Broken Heart’ T-shirts. As always, they are made using only top quality shirts, and will be the attire of choice for all discerning music fans at the Tamworth CMF and everywhere else 2005!
Sizes available are: Ladies ‘Raglan’ – 12; plus M; L; XL; and (for the first time) some XXL. All $30.
They can be purchased at gigs or by emailing floodjunk@theflood.com.au  (we will forward payment details).

The ‘Killer’
Many of you who have attended The Flood shows in recent times, will have missed the imposing and inimitable presence of Wayne ‘The Killer’ Kellett on bass. After numerous gigs as a Kev, James and Tim three-piece Flood, it was collectively decided that five people was one too many for a band in the current climate - and that we could deliver a better noise to you guys as a four-piece band. After many years of unflinchingly loyal service and commitment to the band, it was the toughest decision ever to let Killer go, and he remains a highly respected friend and musicians and one of the nicest humans we could hope to have shared the stage with. Messages can be forwarded to Killer at: waynekellett@bigpond.com

The Flood

Single release
“YOU MIGHT BE THERE”
"...I've felt the sting of your lovin' heart
But like the bee there's always honey with the dart..."

The Flood is right on track with their latest single, the rollicking “You Might Be There” written by lead singer Kevin Bennett.
The 2nd song to be released from The Flood’s self titled album, “You Might Be There” dives in at the deep end of the human condition and floats the idea of acceptance.

The Flood’s appeal for mainstream audiences is in the strong narratives and superb vocals from Kevin Bennett combined with the harmonies, backwater blues, roots and alternative country rhythms from James Gillard, Tim Wedde and Steve Fearnley.

They’re currently riding high on the crest of country music charts with the EP single “Australian For Broken Heart” and touring to Norfolk Island, New South Wales and Queensland until the end of the year.

The Flood’s “Plenty of Time” concert with special guest Kevin Welch was filmed at The Basement in 2003 and can be seen on the Country Music Channel throughout December.
