LIKE MINDED FELONS TOUR
Singer-songwriters James Blundell, Karl Broadie and Nik Phillips unite as Like Minded Felons for a series of intimate acoustic shows in July and August.

Like Minded Felons shine individually and share the spotlight with original songs from their latest albums, performing almost 3 hours in a stage concept inspired by the acclaimed 1970’s Rolling Thunder Revues.

James Blundell brings material from Ring Around The Moon, Karl Broadie showcases One Million Emeralds, his brand new 3rd album and Nik Phillips celebrates the re-issue of Songs from The 4th Floor.

James Blundell is an iconic performer and recipient of 9 Golden Guitars, Double Platinum, Platinum and Gold Sales Awards and a multiple ARIA Award nominee. When his latest album Ring Around The Moon was released in March, the single Higher Than Heaven had already gained radio and television support and the clip reached #1 in March on the Country Music Channel.

James was the first Australian country artist to create an impact on the mainstream pop charts and for many years was the highest selling artist in that genre. He was also the first Australian country act to sign to a major label recording deal in Nashville and has penned hits for Lee Kernaghan, Slim Dusty and Jimmy Little.

Karl Broadie is a displaced troubadour from Scotland with a firm reputation as one of Australia's most talented and hardest working singer/songwriters. Now Sydney based, Karl’s debut album Nowhere Now Here (2003) and EP Everybody’s Gold (2004) received rave reviews and global recognition in MOJO, Uncut, Record Collector, Harp, Amplifier and Rhythms.

Nowhere Now Here and Black Crow Calling (2005) reached the #1 spot on the UK’s Americana chart and Karl’s 3rd album One Million Emeralds will be released in Jull on ABC Music.

Nik Phillips’ Songs from the 4th Floor was his first foray onto the national stage last year and continues to receive strong airplay around the country. The singles Not In This Life, No One Is To Blame and Postcards have all featured regularly on CMC.

A New Talent finalist at this year’s CMAA Golden Guitar Awards, Nik recently returned from performance in Guangdong and is the first Australian to sign a licensing agreement for distribution in China (with Pacific Audio and Video Company).

Dear Friends,
I hope this finds you well.
Back in '97 before I moved to Australia, I spent some wonderful time in New Zealand. I had barely landed on that fine island (the North one) when a good friend kindly put on some background music whilst we caught up on times-gone-by from yonder years in London town. Rudely....I stopped listening to my dear buddy's excitable ramblings and turned instead to the sweet sound coming from the stereo....."hold up there pal....who in the heck is this singing?" "you never heard Paul Kelly before??" was his reply "well I have now and I'm feeling a bit faint..."?

Sadly, yes! '97 was my first encounter. In the days and weeks that followed, that greatest hits record was on endless repeat and I was moved.

Paul Kelly is a gem and I'll forever wear it proud that he inspires me in my attempts as a songwriter. Several years before my awakening in NZ, I had been to Australia as a backpacker. Somebody sent me to Coober Pedy, fossicking for Opals. I sure wish they'd sent me to St. Kilda where I may have discovered Paul Kelly five years previous.

KARL BROADIE "HOW TO MAKE GRAVY"? from THE WOODSMOKE EP (Released 24.10.06)
Details of the actual release and why I specifically recorded this song are included in the Press Release (attached).
Many thanks for reading on and all the best!
Cheers

KARL BROADIE WINS INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION
No 1 selling* singer/songwriter Karl Broadie has won the Roots/Americana category of the prestigious International Songwriting Competition
with his song ‘Black Crow Callin’’

Highly respected roots/country tunesmith KARL BROADIE has beaten a slew of contestants (the ISC attracted 15 000 entrants from 82 countries) and impressed an array of judges to win international songwriting acclaim for his song ‘Black Crow Callin’’ from the album of the same name. Judges for the competition – named as ‘the songwriting competition to take note of’ by The New York Times - included Tom Waits, Loretta Lynn, LeAnn Rimes, Joss Stone, Macy Gray, Steve Vai and The Donnas. Karl is one of only two Australians to be so honoured.

Karl Broadie’s evocative lyrics and beautiful melodies have been steadily winning him fans since he first appeared on the scene in 2003, and 2006 has been his biggest year yet, with the videos for the singles ‘Long, Long Way’ and ‘It Lasts’ – from the 2005 release Black Crow Callin’ - going into high rotation on the Country Music Channel, and the imminent release of his new video for ‘Diamond in the Dark’.

Karl was also nominated for a 2006 Golden Guitar Award for New Talent of the Year, and played to great acclaim at the Tamworth Country Music and Port Fairy Folk Festivals. He continues to make new friends across Australia as he tours solo and in support of others (upcoming support slots include Bill Chambers, Felicity Urquhart and Corb Lund).

Set to become one of the biggest roots/country performers in Australia, Karl is also one of the hardest-working – but he’s always available to do an interview. Contact Sophie Hamley, publicist, on 0410 454 600 or email info@karlbroadie.com

*Black Crow Callin’ went directly to #1 on Americana UK Charts and remained there for July & August; #8 European Americana Airplay Charts; #20 Australian ARIA Country Chart

Praise for Karl Broadie’s Black Crow Callin’
‘Black Crow Callin' touches on many different styles, all are played perfectly … These love songs, road songs and drinking songs will repay the faith shown in his debut, reassure those who knew all along they were onto a good thing and win him countless new fans along the way’ Americana UK

‘His debut album, Nowhere Now Here (2003), and follow-up EP Everybody’s Gold (2004) earned him a strong reputation, both in Australia and internationally, as a very fine craftsman of songs. The Sydney-based Scotsman has a husky vocal quality suggesting one smoke too many and one Scotch too few – but one that fits admirably with Karl’s songs. Arrangements are often sparse and almost modal at times – but that lends to more attention to the song content, and that’s really what Karl is about. Lots of ‘I’ in the songs – they’re personal, reflective and incisive – almost conversational at times – with emotive lyrics that provide a real a window into the soul of the songwriter. You might argue whether it’s country or not, but in terms of excellent songwriting and ‘just right’ delivery – no argument whatsoever.’ Capital News (Sound Advice)

Praise for Nowhere Now Here (2003)
‘A Scots-born Oz-based singer-songwriter whose chops are in the right place. His voice comes nicely cracked, his folksy songs often worth an instant replay.’ Mojo

Imagine the pure, raw power of whatever it is that makes Wilco amazing, taken back to its roots via some smokey pub in the Scottish highlands and even the odd thunderstorm, and you have the charming world of Karl Broadie.’ Record Collector

‘Broadie's voice is quite simply amazing … a genuinely triumphant first record, and indeed the first truly essential album of 2003’ Americana UK

‘you won't hear a better locally produced country artist this year’ Juice

‘I wouldn’t want to be without this album. Give it a listen and feel the same way’ Pennyblack Music

Karl Broadie
Karl Broadie & Band have just returned from a successful sixteen date
UK Tour to promote the brand new album Black Crow Callin’.

Fresh from headlining the Grass Roots stage at The Tartan Heart
Festival (Belladrum, Scotland) and Glasgow’s King Tut’s Wah Wah
Hut among many.

The band have also just played several shows at The Gympie Muster in
QLD. Karl's "real" introduction to Country music in Australia!

Karl recently appeared live as a personal guest of BBC Radio 2’s
legendary presenter, Johnnie Walker and is also a favorite with many
shows on the BBC in the UK with regular spins on BBC Radio Scotland
(Iain Anderson, Tom Morton, Bryan Burnett, Archie Fisher & Janice
Forsythe) BBC Radio 2 (Bob Harris, Johnnie Walker & Terry Wogan!),
BBC Radio Ulster (Ralph McClean), and BBC Radio Alba (The Tompien
Show) and on Australia’s finest ABC Country show “Saturday Night
Country” with John Nutting.

CMC - The Country Music Channel are big supporters too with the clip
for “It Lasts” (Broadie’s stunning vocal collaboration with
Kevin Bennett from The Flood) CMC have reported over 250 spins so far!

Sydney-based Scotsman, Karl Broadie found his way to Australia back
in 1997. A debut album, Nowhere Now Here (2003) and a follow-up Ep
Everybody’s Gold (2004) earned this displaced poet/lyricist/
troubadour, global recognition and a reputation as a very fine
craftsman of songs.

Reviews in
MOJO, UNCUT, RECORD COLLECTOR, HARP (USA), AMPLIFIER (USA)
Rhythms (AUS) all praised Broadie’s unique “sweetly cracked”
voice and drew songwriting comparisons to the finest of the Americana/
Alt-Country genre; Dylan, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits,
Neil Young and Wilco.

On the brand new album Black Crow Callin’ (Universal Music
Australia) Broadie swoops, glides and philosophizes about love gone
somewhere and as ever, takes the listener along for the ride with his
trademark road songs.
