STACEY MORRIS NOMINATED FOR TWO MAJOR AWARDS Sydney, August 15, 2005 Adding to a long list of accolades for Stacey in 2005 is the announcement that she has made it to the finals for two major Country Music Awards.
The COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA (CMAA) has nominated Stacey as a finalist for one of their Achiever Awards, Independent Entertainer of the Year. Now in its eleventh year, this is the Country Music Industry’s recognition of the best of the best. The winners will be announced on Monday September 12 at a Gala Presentation hosted by Kerri-Anne Kennerley. In addition the TELSTRA COUNTRY WIDE SOUTHERN STARS THE AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS has nominated Stacey as a finalist for the Australian Independent Female Vocalist of the Year. These awards are held in conjunction with the 10 day Mildura Country Music Festival. The organiser, John Arnold, reported a total of 255 individual entries this year with representatives who are established artists and previous award winners as well as new and rising stars. The level of interest is a positive acknowledgement of the development and promotion of Australian Country Music. Winners will be announced on Saturday 1 October at the Mildura Arts Centre. When told of her nominations Stacey was thrilled –she says “these acknowledgements mean a lot to me. Singing is what I love to do –but it’s not always easy, driving for miles to a gig, singing my heart out week-in, week out, sometimes to empty rooms – tucking the kids in before I go out on the road again. Stacey was born into a musical family. The youngest of seven children, her father Stan Ellis was a trumpet and piano player and songwriter, and mother Ruby a well known singer in Australia and England. Ruby was hailed as Australia’s Judy Garland in her heyday. Stacey inherited her mother’s strong and emotive singing voice and from the age of four was a songstress and dancer, winning every talent questshe entered, and singing radio jingles. In 1996 she won the Australian Open Singing Championship and has come of age in terms of her choice of styles. Her musical influences arevaried but include powerful vocalists from high voltage rock n ‘roll, jazz and blues and “new”country, both male and female. Stacey is well known in the Illawarra region and has focused her musical energies on Country music for the last seven years. Stacey is a singer of the goose bump variety. Both Alan Jones and John Nutting are avid fans. Everyone who has listened to Borders and Boundaries says “Where has this girl been?” Stacey plays her audience as well as she sings. She builds a warm rapport with her gutsy sound, spontaneous repartee and wit and conveys a performer who really enjoys what she is doing. The emotion in her delivery tells tales of a life lived with a lot of pain and a lot of joy; Stacey has been in both places but that’s her story to tell. Stacey’s latest album Borders and Boundaries is the result of collaboration with Herm Kovac, well-known Country Music producer. Stacey’s manager approached Herm to produce her new album based on recommendations from just about everyone involved with Country Music. Herm’s ability to hear the possibilities of the music, and Stacey’s seasoned approach to getting the note just right, resulted in a polished album that makes it hard to pick the “best” track. The voice -track took just four hours with no retakes, the result of a shared commitment to the end result, and a special relationship which developed between Stacey and Herm.
