A Paul Kelly album release is not complete without a
tour. His most recent albums have included the Bluegrass
inspired Foggy Highway, the extraordinary Chad Blake produced
Ways and Means, and the new album Stolen Apples, due for release
7 July 2007.
From very early on in his career, Paul Kelly has been recognised
as one of the most significant singer/songwriters in the
country. Inspired initially by the likes of Bob Dylan, Hank
Williams, Lou Reed and Ray Davies, Kelly's narrative song
writing is infused with wry observations, bittersweet emotions
and enormous appeal.
Hitting the road with Paul are Cameron Bruce (keyboards), Ash
Naylor (guitar), Peter Luscombe (drums), Bill McDonald (bass)
and Dan Kelly (guitar).

Jindabyne Soundtrack
won Soundtrack of the year at the Aria Awards
October 11th 2006
Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show
Album Category for this year's ARIA Awards
Paul Kelly, Dan Luscombe, Katie Brianna & the Stormwater Boys -
Jindabyne Soundtrack - (Capitol/EMI) 'Jindabyne Fair' is on radio
now! Katie went to the ARIA'S 2006 'Fine Arts awards" before the
big ones later in the month. Last year Katie recorded the song
Paul Kelly wrote for the movie (he's done the music for it!).
The Australian film, 'Jindabyne' (directed by Ray
Lawrence), opened in cinemas on the 20th July.
The Australian film Jindabyne was shot in Australia's Snowy
Mountains and is the film
adaptation of Raymond Carver's novel So Much Water So Close To
Home. It
stars Laura Linney, Deborra-Lee Furness, Gabriel Byrne, Leah
Purcell and
John Howard (the actor).
The Waifs - Paul Kelly
Thursday, August 03, 2006: The Waifs
returned to the stage tonight for the first time in over a year
since becoming new mums. To do so, they traveled several thousand
miles with their 10 month old sons to the legendary Birchmere
music hall in hot, steamy Alexandria, Virginia USA. And they did
it in style with a solo guitar/harmonica player by the name of
Paul Kelly as their opening act….yes, the opening act! What a
double treat for all in the nearly sold out venue.
The Birchmere doesn’t allow photos during shows, and the artists
did not emerge afterwards. So, here is the only photo record of
the evening.
As the lights went down, Paul warmed
up his fingers, as he said, with the melancholy “They Thought I
Was Asleep” from Foggy Highway. He apologized for not having the
rest of The Stormwater Boys with him as he later played two more
tracks from their latest CD: “Song of the Old Rake” and “Down to
My Soul.” His set also included such standards as “How to Make
Gravy” and a new song titled "You're Beautiful, 39, and You're
Mine."
After Paul sang the tragic “Everything’s Turning to White,” he
announced that the song was based on the Raymond Carver's short
story "So Much Water So Close to Home." This story now is the
basis for a new movie in production to be called “Jindabyne” for
which Paul was asked to write the musical score.
The Waifs seemed a bit nervous being front of a crowd for the
first time in a while, but immediately got into the groove of
their music and energetic performance style. After the first
number when the audience burst into applause, the girls remarked,
“Never thought we would miss that sound so much. Thank you. It is
so good to be back.”
Halfway into their set, Paul Kelly joined them on banjo as The
Waifs delivered a spirited rendition of the song he co-wrote Kev
Carmody, “From Small Things, Big Things Grow” …a very special
moment in the show.
Donna later told a story about how they felt like they “used to be
famous” during their hiatus. While shopping at a convenience
store, Vickie paid a clerk who was wearing a Waifs’ t-shirt … “nor
a hint, not of glimmer of recognition,” she lamented. One other
announcement during their set was that while Donna and Vickie took
time off to make babies, Josh spent the time making instruments.
He played his beautiful new acoustic guitar, electric guitar and
ukulele during the show.
The Birchmere sports a wall of fame with photos of the most famous
artists who have appeared there. As the show ended, Donna yelled
out, “Having Paul Kelly as an opening act is unbelievable. Now
that we have done that, we deserve our picture up on the wall
too!” The standing ovation from the crowd seemed to indicate that
they agreed.
Tonight was the first stop of a multi-week North American tour,
where Paul Kelly and The Waifs will appear together at clubs and
festivals in several US states and the Canadian province of
Alberta. See their websites for details:
