2nd Manilla Festival Makes It’s Mark
The Manilla Volunteer Rescue Squad’s expectations were shattered in the nicest
possible way over the weekend.
The Liberty Manila Music & Arts Festival realised it’s objectives with so many
surprises. Captain Robert Sutherland and President John Brand said the many
events provided locals and visitors with a busy schedule of events.
“We are so appreciative of our Express newspaper and our regional media who
consideration saw to it that New England residents knew all about what we put on
the weekend calendar.” They said.
Leaving the Bowling Club On Sunday night they paid tribute to the support of all
businesses for support and sponsorship. “Sam and Chris Michael of Liberty
Service Station kick started the weekend months ago and every business
approached gave us a helping hand.” John Brand said.
The winner of the LG Fridge Freeze was Dick Hartley of Manilla and the Dance
Showcase was the surprise weekend event. Held at the Bowling Club on Sunday
afternoon it was a full house situation without a spare seat in the building.
“Robyn Kaluder’s youngsters with “The Sesame Street Dance” and Donna Souter’s
Irish Dancers earned sustained applause. The Dance For Fun Large Team presenting
their freestyle routine also stunned the large audience.” Robert Sutherland
said.
The Festival Raffle was a hit with the last of the printed tickets being sold
minutes prior to the draw.
High praise was afforded Erik Dekkers and his team for a superb Weekend Art
Display. The Big Fish hosted the craft event and for a first year it pleased
Raelene Turner.
The “Tamworth on Parade” Spectacular attracted visitors from Lismore,
Tenterfield, Gunnedah, Wauchope, Goulburn, Campbelltown, Gosford, Quirindi,
Sydney, Wagga, Dubbo and elsewhere. Rob Breese, Dyna Rae, Bill Plevey, Trevor
Coombes, Les Partell, and John Brand all distinguished themselves with
outstanding performances. Jo Drain and the St Michael’s School Children opened
the concert with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem.
A small and enthusiastic turnout at the Junior Disco gave DJ Jarred Sutherland
the thumbs up sign for a professional task well done.
The Line Dance Ball on Sunday night was a stylish and colourful affair with
dancers from 8 years hitting the dance floor. Manila’s Annie Moffat who is a
young 89 years displayed her ballroom dancing skills.
Festival Producer Joe McManamon said he was delighted with the number of
visitors attending the events and said that so many locals contributed to an
event that pleased and surprised. “ We will write to all who played a part and
we can be proud of everyone from the media, dancers, to Ted Taylor for the Art
Show hanging material to Erik Dekkers, to Phil Pinch to our entertainers to the
businesses while so many paid tribute to the magnificent Memorial Town Hall
Complex. The Vintage Machinery has built up a annual national event of
significance in June while the festival has opened the door for all locals to
see it as having potential.” He said.
VRA Treasurer, Dot Allwell said it will take a week or so for the VRA to acquit
the bottom line and all monies raised will be put to good use by them.
