- Brian Letton & Terry Bennetts in Bungedore
National Bush Ballad Awards This Weekend
- The Aussie Independent Music songwriters were named in the
final nominations in Male Vocal and Group/Duo in November last
year.
Multi-award winning vocalist Brian Letton and accomplished
singer/songwriter Terry Bennetts of West Australian Duo Terry &
Jenny Bennetts are both finalists in the 2007 Stan Coster Memorial
Australian Bush Ballad Awards.
Brian Letton was named last year’s Male Vocal of the Year at the
national awards held annually in Bungedore in the state’s south
near Queanbeyan and the national capital Canberra and is again
sitting squarely in the Top Three Nominations in Saturday’s
Awards.
His latest album ‘Today’ has both tracks ‘My Son’ the 2007 Male
Vocal nomination and the 2006 winner ‘Two Chords’ originally
pre-released as a single. The album is available through LBS Music
distribution and online www.digitalmusiccentre.com.au
Brian is currently working on his latest project with this year’s
ACMF Roll of Renown recipient producer Lindsay Butler. It’s due
for release later in 2007.
Terry and Jenny Bennetts arrived in Bungedore yesterday after
several shows in Tamworth during country music month promoting
their latest album.
Following last year’s successful CD ‘The Soldier With His Banjo’
they released their latest album ‘The Good Old Days’. The title
track made the Top Five in the prestigious TIARA 2007 Gentleman
Geoff Brown Memorial Award.
Both albums are available through LBS Music 07 5562 1292 and The
Country Music Store 07 3221 3000 or direct from Terry & Jenny 08
93063025.
Produced by Terry Bennetts ‘The Good Old Days’ boasts a great
lineup of WA session musicians Ian Simpson on banjo in an
instrumental with Terry; Lucky Oceans pedal steel accordion and
slide dobro; Mark Donohoe bass; Eric Kowarski fiddle; Dave Clark
harmonica & fiddle; Ric Whittle drums; Sophie Walker cello; Eunice
Hicks fiddle and Terry Bennetts on all guitar work and mandolin.
It’s this instrumental line-up with Terry Bennetts and Ian Simpson
on the track ‘Trouble At The Diggings’ that’s made the top three
in the Group/Duo Section.
In 2005 their very successful debut album featured the single The
Soldier With His Banjo which stormed into major music awards and
national songwriting honours.
Four out of the eight songs on the album either won awards or were
finalists leaving no doubts about Terry and Jenny’s abilities as
songwriters.
Its steady rise to recognition included runner-up in the 2005
Boyup Brook Country Music Awards; finals of the TSA South East
Queensland Songwriting Awards; runner-up in the ASA Australian
Songwriting Awards Country Category and the NT Bush Ballad Song of
the Year; Top Five Finalist in the TSA Tamworth Songwriting
National Awards; Top Five CMAA Awards Golden Guitars Bush Ballad
and selection by EMI for The Winners Album.
It didn’t stop there – at last year’s Bungendore Stan Coster
Memorial Awards Jenny won the Female Vocal with her version of
Slim Dusty’s Camooweal.
Announcements and presentations to this year’s successful artists
will take place on Saturday evening 3 February 2007 on the Greg
Gordon stage and will be followed by what will be an incredible
concert including all nominees a total of 21 of Australia’s best.
‘The growth and popularity of the Australian Bush Ballad and the
importance of these awards is well demonstrated in the number and
diversity of the nominations received for 2007. Over 180
nominations. They have once again attracted nominations from the
very best ‘Australian country artists’.’
‘The awards together with the Bungendore Muster continue to
consolidate awareness of the Bush Ballad and are major factors in
the preservation of the Australian story through the music that is
Australian’ Organisers said.

- Major award for Brian
Letton
17 February 2006
The Australian Bush Ballad Awards were held at Bungendore New
South Wales last weekend. The Stan Coster Memorial Awards
recognize nationally the input by artists and musicians to
traditional ballads and their essence in a uniquely Australian
marketplace.
Brian Letton won the Male Vocal Category for his single ‘Two
Chords’.
Co-written by Shaza-Leigh and Rick Aitchison its a deeply moving
melodic song that portrays age and circumstance and is a ballad of
true account. It tells a story that Australians relate to and
expect of their balladeers which is the main criteria if not the
only for any bush ballad and which is pivotal in any award
recognition especially the Australian Bush Ballads.
Brian’s sixteenth album and newest release ‘Today’ delivers all
that his audiences expect. Ironically it’s synonymous with his own
view of his career. Released in December 2005 ‘Today’ is purely
Brian Letton - a collection of new songs and one that reminisces.
A consistent and respected audience pleaser Brian has a
considerable percentage of country music followers who simply just
’like’ his music and what he does. Some of his past albums have
been dedications of music where he recorded covers by Jim Reeves
and a selection of gospel material. More often his albums contain
originals either self penned, penned by other writers or
co-written. His best work however remains with songs like the
beautiful ‘In the Arms of a Memory’ by NZ writer Ginny Peters and
‘Hard Calloused Hands’ co-written by Brian, Roy Sinnamon and Shaza
and ‘Two Chords’ parochial in every sense - to Australia, to
simplicity and to unrefined analogy.
It’s not unusual for listeners to ring radio stations and request
‘more songs like that’ or ‘can you play more of Brian Letton. He’s
a great artist. We don’t hear enough of him’.
On behalf of Aussie Independent Music - Congratulations a worthy
win Brian and to Shaza-Leigh and Rick Aitchison for ‘first the
song’.
