Alby Pool – You Can’t Walk This Road Alone
Review By ‘The Swamp Doctor’ Bryan Willems 22 May 2007
Redneck Recommenders No. 1

I picked up Alby Pool's most recent album ‘You Can't Walk This Road Alone.’ I have two of his earlier releases from 2001 ‘Till the Old Wears Off’ and the 2004 release ‘Back In The Swing’.

Alby's most recent release doesn't disappoint. His vocals are wonderful and his material impeccable. He has a gifted ear for picking a great country song. All of the material is from American country writers.

There's lots of dross out there (yes – even in the USA!) but Alby comes up with the goods…no doubt helped by his good friend and now Nashville based Australian songwriter Travis List sending great material Alby's way!

Musically the album is a treat.

Brad Bergen holds down the lead guitar and drums for the album. He knows how to play ‘country’ with both instruments. It's refreshing to see someone so young playing great country music and treating their instruments with respect.

Tomi Graso does the pedal steel guitar, Mick Albeck the fiddle duties. Fellow vocalist and country artist Rob Wilson does acoustic guitar, harmonica and backing vocals.

A real surprise for me is Alby providing bass for his album – which he plays wonderfully! All of the music is refreshing and clear…you can hear every line, every instrument, every vocal in every song – quite unlike the over compressed overplayed karaoke noise that often comes out on ‘modern country’ albums today.

Highlights of the album for me are the duet with his wife Annie ‘Opportunity of a Lifetime’ and ‘I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something’ (originally co-written and sung by Leanne Womack).
The track of the album has to be the Dean Dillon/Pam Bedford penned ‘Old News.’ A remarkable track – get the album for that one song!

Alby has got to be the George Strait of Australia. He's staying country, it's always great material and you know what you'll get with an Alby Pool album.

The main difference is the lack of any public accolades. Despite years of great performances and albums he has yet (to my knowledge anyway) to pick up any awards in Australia … or even rate a finalist nomination for any awards. There are only two possibilities that I can think of …… either he sounds so ‘American’ and sings ‘American’ songs that the various organisations sponsoring numerous country awards don't rate him or; Alby's so country that he doesn't bother to enter award competitions. I suspect it's the latter!
Treat yourself to an Alby Pool album.

Intro: I used to do a weekly radio program called ‘Hi-Tech Redneck’ on 2RRR 88.5FM in Sydney but I've unfortunately have had to give it away – for good reason however – too busy doing live gigs on Friday nights. One of the things I loved about radio was listening and recommending new material. I thought to myself; ‘Self, you've got a website /blog /etc…why not do a semi-regular article where I can listen and recommend new material?’ This isn't really an album review article…if I don't like it, it won't be on here…just material that I enjoy and recommend.

New CD!!
Alby Pool ON THE ROAD and NOT ALONE
OK I’m a fan but it’s hard to be objective when presented with an album by one of the best country/western swing artists Australia has ever produced. Deborah Minter CAPNEWS November 2006

Alby Pool has just returned from touring in New England NSW, Central and Southern Queensland and the Far North.
‘I’ve never toured in Queensland. I’ve never been north of Caboolture’ Alby said.

It’s not as if Alby is a stranger to distance and travelling. He’s worked a lot of venues and done a lot of kilometres between Maitland and the rest of NSW since his move across the Nullabor from West Australia in the ‘90s.

You Can’t Walk This Road Alone is Alby’s latest album. Released in time for the tour and Tamworth in January Alby has put together some of the best collection of country you would want to hear. Co-produced with Rob Wilson it’s dedicated to all the musicians and artists and the help they’ve given on previous albums and along the way.

You Can’t Walk This Road Alone says thanks to Rob Wilson for his production and recording ability; Anthony and Sarah Taylor for their friendship and awesome talent, Brad Bergen for his mateship musical multi-talents and undying commitment to country music and Travis List for finding some of the songs for the project.

Not to mention gratitude to session musos Mick Albeck Tomi Grasso and Yianni Moratidis.

The month long tour started out in Tamworth in October and headed north to Brisbane Bribie Island Maryaborough Charters Towers Home Hill Townsville Ingham Kurrimine Cardwell Clermont Bundaberg and back through Maryaborough Bribie Island and Brisbane to Maitland and the Central Coast.

It was unlike any experience Alby had encountered visiting some of the most beautiful areas of the tropics through Mission Beach and in the south around Bribie Island.

‘The tour was fantastic. We were received very well. Unfortunately a number of acts had been through the areas just prior. But that’s not what this tour was about. It was about making grounds for the next one. ‘

‘Working with Anthony and Sarah Taylor and Andy Toombs was a pleasure. The Far North is Anthony and Sarah’s home territory. We’ll be back on the road and tour there again. That’s certain.’

To find an album with every song a winner is something to be treasured and Alby has provided just that.  Just like a best selling book that you can’t put down until the end, you will savour every song until the CD is finished.  All of the tracks are favourites that have inspired and influenced him over the years.  Alby has the enviable ability to caress the melody of a slow ballad, put the bounce in swing and give us pure country music that will please the most astute critics.   If you like George Strait, you will love this album. With his surprisingly varied vocal range and  surrounded by some of this countries finest muso’s, together with excellent backing vocalists makes this collection of songs very easy listening.   This CD proves that the extremely talented Alby Pool is Australia’s most underrated singer around today.

Hi Folks,
A big THANK YOU for all your support with yet another album which is my
fourth up to date.  On this one I have chosen to record a collection of songs from
my favourite Country music artists such as GENE WATSON, VERN GOSDIN,
GEORGE STRAIT, MARK CHESNUTT, HANK WILLIAMS JNR., MARK COLLIE
and GEORGE JONES.  These are just a few of the artists that have had a
tremendous influence on me throughout my career in Country Music.

I am delighted to take this opportunity to introduce my daughter Melody singing
the bonus track on this album. Although she has only been singing now for about
2 years she was able to sing the lead part as well as the harmony along with her
mother Annie, and Kelvin Nolan on Guitars. This was her first time in a recording
studio and my wish is that she continues to enjoy her musical journey as much as
I have.

In the past few years I have been burdened with some health problems, but as the
title track to this album says, I'm now "Back In The Swing of Things" and looking
forward to returning to the live and festival circuits.
Once again thank you and good health.
