Nik Phillips to Re-Release 'Songs From the 4th Floor'
Brisbane based alt-country performer Nik Phillips has re-packaged his critically acclaimed album 'Songs From The 4th Floor' for release to retail early in September. The re-packaged version features 3 new tracks - the Country Music Channel (CMC) video favourite 'Postcard', the forthcoming single 'My Town' and 'Walls Fall Down' - along with new artwork and the previously heard singles 'Not In This Life' (nominated for a Golden Guitar at the 2007 awards) and 'No One Is To Blame'. The album will be released in China before the end of the year under the title 'Postcard'.

Nik who performed at last weekend's Gympie Muster (with The Flood's James Gillard filling in on Bass when Marlon Holden was left stranded) will perform in Townsville at the North Queensland Cowboys' final home game of the regular season this Friday August 31 and a follow it with a public performance in the City's Strand Park on Saturday afternoon. Nik has built a strong relationship with the North Queensland capital after recently penning the theme song for Townsville's 'This Is The Life' campaign, which was performed as a duet with James Blundell.

Nik will also be appearing live on ABC's Saturday Night Country with John Nutting at 10:30pm this coming Saturday September 01.

Queensland State Awards
A Huge Success
The annual Gold Medallion Awards presentation was a resounding success last Friday evening at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba. The awards highlighted some of the states finest country music talent and the winners were appreciated by the enthusiastic audience.
Interestingly there was a refreshing cross-section of talent in the winners circle.
Australia’s King of country rock, Lee Kernaghan, won gold for ‘Touring Artist of the Year’ and the smooth country sounds of Arthur Blanch and Shaza Leigh won ‘Male Vocalist’ and ‘Female Vocalist of the Year’ respectively.
Unfortunately Arthur was unable to attend as his daughter Jewel Blanch arrived in Australia for a special celebration the day preceding the awards. However, Berice rang to say how thrilled and excited he was to be named as his home states’ Male Vocalist of the Year for the past two years.
Shaza Leigh’s latest album has been receiving enormous attention on the airwaves. ABC Radio broadcaster, Jenny Swan presented a pleasantly surprised Shaza with her third consecutive Gold Medallion for the same award. After seeing a polished performance by Shaza earlier in the evening Jenny expressed that Shaza was a worthy and popular recipient.
The Kernaghan Family were well represented. As well as the Touring Artist crown, Lee also collected silver in the Male and Tania Kernaghan took home silver in the Female.
‘The Musician of the Year’ Gold was the third gold for Lindsay Waddington and guitarist, Michael Fix won the silver.

After outstanding performances by the ‘New Talent of the Year’ finalists, Sarah McMonagle (gold) and Rose Carleo (silver), excitedly accepted their awards.
The bush balladeers were also well represented with one of the Traditionalists favourite sons, Graham Rodger taking Gold for ‘Songwriter of the Year’ and Ray Rose winning his first silver. Locals Dean Perrett (gold) and Jeff Brown (silver) were crowned in the ‘Bush Balladeer of the Year’ category.

The awards ceremony closed with Ron Peters, Brian Young & Shorty Ranger being named as the first inductees onto the National Legends Register and receiving life membership to The Gold Medallion Awards.
CMR Nashville radio personality Daryl Kirkup hosted the evening and local country music identity, Chris Jensen was enlisted to compere the awards presentation. Other awards presenters were sourced from local FM radio shows including Dianna Peters, John McFarlane and Stewart McDonald.

The awards were proudly sponsored by Princess Palms on the Beach, The Tamworth Songwriters Association, Voice Pro, Digital Music Centre & LBS Music Group.

New Talent Winners:
Rose Carleo (Silver) & Sarah McMonagle (Gold)

Musician of the Year – Lindsay Waddington
with Female Vocalist of the Year – Shaza Leigh

Famous Johnno's Blues Bar has closed it's doors
A bit of unhappy goss though, for travellers to the North...as of last week, the famous Johnno's Blues Bar has closed it's doors. It would have to be the most famous Northern Queensland venue for all kinds of music and I doubt if there is a musician in the world who has been to Cairns and not visited Johnno's.

Not only were Mick Montgomery and Johnno great supporters of local talent, but they also imported many great International bands and artists. Sad days Phil and Tommy. Cairns will never be the same.

On a happier note...Patti McKinnon has made yet another flying visit to our CaBle Cubby to record 2 new EPs, to be released separately in the near future. Not bad for 2 days work. That's what you call: "Gettin' it done!" eh Patti?

Meanwhile both her albums on our CaBle label are doing extremely well and nearly every track has hit the worldwide charts! The amount of great feedback pouring in is phenomenal!

Having retired from live performing (for now) to concentrate on the studio, Bill and I are hoping to release a brand new duo album early next year....as soon as we get a break in the traffic that will permit us time to record ourselves. We have picked out several tunes from our own original collection, plus quite a few covers from the 70's/80's and a few that go way back to the 50's. We will probably have to make it a double album to fit in all the songs we want to do!

Cazna

Bill and Cazna

That's it for now. Hope all's well in your world, and I will get back to you soon.
Kind regards, Cazna.

27TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL A MAJOR SUCCESS FOR
NORTHERN SUBURBS COUNTRY MUSIC CLUB
Ali Hinchcliffe

The Northern Suburbs Country Music Club staged a highly successful festival at the Gaythorne RSL Club in Mitchelton on the weekend.

“With the rising costs of fuel and general living expenses, to have more than 250 acts in 2 days from as far North as Mackay and as far South as McLean and Sydney, has established this event as one of the most successful on the country music festival calendar” Festival Director, Leisa Bye said

Contestants competed for more than $2500 in prize money in front of capacity crowds over the 2-day event.

The overall performer gong was given to Ali Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe, a member of Logan based Cane Country Music Club was a popular choice with the crowd, with her earthy voice and amazing stage presence!

Junior Overall winner was Dana Hassall of the Dalby Country Music club, who wowed the audience with her beautiful voice and amazing songwriting ability.

“The talent that is in this industry is amazing, and country music fans should attend a festival and witness the abilities of these fine emerging artists, these are definite Golden Guitar winners of the future” Ms Bye said

Queensland country music broadcaster Daryl Kirkup is looking for interested artists and country music acts to interview for his newly launched segment ‘Backstage Pass.’
Daryl can be contacted at:
VoicePRO
Ph: (07) 3285 4556
Fax: (07) 3285 5615
Mobile: 0427 589 662
Postal Address: 52 School Road, Kallangur QLD 4503
Email: dkvoice@bigpond.net.au

Daryl is widely known as a compere at Queensland events and for his regular program on 101.5fm out of Caboolture. He spent five years in commercial radio as a breakfast announcer on morning radio and wore a few hats behind the scenes as program director music director and commercial copywriter at southern Queensland stations prior to moving to Brisbane and setting up his own business VoicePRO.

The new segment is based on an artist profile an interview and single grabs on each track. Each week a new release CD is featured and each track will get airplay. The stories behind each track told by the artist and/or songwriter will lead into each song as part of the overall production. The idea is to combine the music and the stories into a feature presentation and consequently a total promotion of the release.

Daryl said ‘Everyone seems to love the freshness of the idea and the response is supportive. I’m hoping we can syndicate the program to make it available nationally.’

‘Anyone interested in sponsoring the new concept and or the weekly program should contact me also. ’ he added.

‘The hour long segment is part of my weekly Urban Country program on air from 8 til midnight every Wednesday night. It should work very well. Artists can contact me by email or telephone so we can schedule their spot.’

‘I’m also keen to hear from recording artists who are in production and have release dates later in the year or next year to factor their album into the 2006-2007 program schedule.’

Backstage Pass goes to air at 9.00pm on Wednesday August 23 on Caboolture Radio 101.5fm. The first show will feature Melinda Schneider and her latest album Stronger.

‘FRIENDS OF COUNTRY’ NIGHTS TO FINISH.
‘Friends of Country Amateur Nights’ at Edge Hill Bowls Club are to come to an end this Friday night, 23rd June, following a decision by management and committee members.
Started by Colleen Tchumy eleven years ago to cater for walk-up country artists, the nights have been hugely supported by artists, musicians and audiences. Some of these artists have gone on to carve rewarding careers for themselves having gained their stage experience through performing fortnightly at the Club.

Since Mrs. Tchumy ceased her regular involvement with ‘Friends of Country’ seven years ago due to other commitments, the amateur nights have been run by local country duo Bill & Cazna Goodall (‘Ambush’) with the help of ‘friends’.

Bill Goodall has been the backbone of ‘Friends of Country’ since the beginning, supplying the equipment, lighting, and the musical backing, accompanied by a wide selection of available musicians over the years who were happy to donate their time.

There have been sad times too, with many of the ‘friends’ having either moved away or passed on…..Noel Dobell, Rod Rumble, Jack & Lil Walsh, and more recently Leila Backshall, to name a few. But the memories will live in the hearts of many for a long time to come.

A huge thanks must go to the Edge Hill Bowls Club for their continued support throughout. But the Club feels it is time for a change, so from the
7th July onwards, on the first Friday of every month, the entertainment will be provided by ‘THE GOODALL REVUE’, featuring Bill, Cazna, Troy and Brenda Goodall, with selected professional guest artists.

‘THE GOODALL REVUE’ will cover a wide variety of Country-cored and ‘crossover’ music from traditional to modern Country/Rock, along with a selection of ‘Shadows’ style instrumentals. The Club is hoping for the support of their many patrons for the new format, and also from the ‘Friends of Country’.

NORTH QLD SAYS THANK YOU!
On behalf of the victims of Cyclone Larry, here is a huge thank you to all the Artists and Musicians who performed at the Cairns Convention Centre last weekend (28th April), to raise funds, which I believe were staggering.
It was great to see so many of our Country's finest performers up here in the North, and all donating their time and talents to appear on one superbly dynamic show. How Aussie is that?
We are awesomely grateful! Please come back soon....we love you all.

Copping it Coppo Style
Reporter: Kate Humphris
Presenter: Jason Hagen
Friday, 21 November 2003
Cop it Sweet is Wendy Coppo’s debut album.
Wendy Coppo has been making noise for a long time.
The tiny Cairns country singer first showed off her voice as a five year old, singing the national anthem for family and friends.
A few years later, she continued singing that tune to a wider audience – as part of the “Australian Cowgirls” – performing on stages such as the Rugby League Grand Final, Gold Coast Indy, and the TV show “It’s a Knockout”.
After stepping out of the industry for a while, Wendy re emerged five years ago – and her voice was again getting people talking.
Fifteen months ago, she began work on her debut album.
At that stage – it was an album of cover songs, but after being named a finalist in the “Star Maker” competition at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, Wendy got the writing bug.
Drawing on the inspiration of her family – she’s a wife and mum of three kids – the album is now a positive mix of country, folk, bush ballads – even a bit of rock, and includes 8 tracks written by Coppo.
She plans to tour throughout Queensland and New South Wales in the New Year – including a return to Tamworth – and has become increasingly popular in Newcastle and Sydney.
The album ‘Cop it Sweet’ has already been picked up by a number of radio stations – and Wendy hopes this will increase after its official launch this weekend.
Copping a life in music
Before launching her album, Wendy popped into the ABC Far North studio to have a chat about the recording process – and what Tamworth has done for her career.

Cop it Sweet – Windows Media Format

‘Cop it Sweet’ is one of Wendy's original songs on her debut album.

2003 TAMWORTH STAR MAKER finalist WENDY COPPO has released her debut CD –
‘COP IT SWEET’.

Her CD launch on Sunday (23rd November) was a huge success with excellent sales. Wendy performed eight songs from the album, plus two sets of popular country hits, receiving a standing ovation! It was a day to remember, and wonderfully supported by the Cairns media, and of course all our ‘Friends of Country’.

A big thanks to Bob Burgess…our MC for the day, and also the wonderful management and staff of REFLECTIONS ON THE LAKE at Lake Placid, who made sure no-one became hungry or thirsty. And the musical support we had before and after (and during) with the SUN-DRIED CHILLI PEPPERS. What a great Trio! Thanks Sue for lending us the boys for a few hours.

Fifteen months in the making, the fourteen track album contains a variety of country styles from traditional to contemporary, and features Wendy’s songwriting skills as well as her unique vocal talent.

Two of the original tunes, including the title track, were written by Cazna Goodall, and Wendy has also done a remake of Cazna’s 70’s tune “HANDLE ME WITH LOVE”.

Her demo CD has already created major interest via the airways, and since this year’s Tamworth Festival, where she also performed on the Brian Young Show and the North Queensland Showcase, Wendy has been kept extremely busy with live interviews and personal appearances. She has also been performing regularly throughout North Queensland in between studio sessions.

She has proved herself to be one of our finest performers, having taken out a multitude of festival awards throughout Australia, including Charters Towers Overall winner in 2002, and winner of the female section in 2003.

Recorded at Select Sound Studios in Cairns, the independent CD was produced by Bill and Cazna Goodall, (BILLY HAZE & CAZNA;) and features some of the north’s best country musicians. Bill and Cazna also co-wrote the first track with Wendy, and ten of the tunes are originals.

The CD has been receiving constant airplay on ABC radio in Cairns, and will be released to the stores as soon as the next batch arrives off the plane. Meanwhile…see details below for info.
