Hi Helen! Greetings from Wilkesboro in the misty
hills of North Carolina where we arrived today for our first
MerleFest.

Over eighty thousand visitors are expected over the next four
days. This is the 18th MerleFest which honors the life of American
folk music icon Doc Watson’s son and stage partner Merle whose
life ended early due to a tractor accident. This Americana,
bluegrass, “roots,” and mountain musical celebration of his life
is played across 13 venues spread across the athletic fields and
parking lots of Wilkes Community College …. kind of a West Leagues
on steroids … all outdoors. The largest venue is the Watson Stage
where the headline acts appear. This is where most of the action
was focused today...
The program started with a California “acoustic mayhem” band
called The Waybacks. They were followed by a collection of
beautiful and extremely talented solo musicians who teamed up for
the occasion to form a group named Uncle Earl. Mandolin virtuoso
and bluegrass spokesman Tim O’Brien followed with a solid
performance of his mellow bluegrass style. The audience was then
a-buzz waiting for the first lady of country music, the coal
miner’s daughter Loretta Lynn. Despite a bout with Spring-time
allergies which affected her voice, she dazzled the crowd with her
old standards as well as two songs from her recent Grammy Award
winning project Van Lear Rose. Our night (long day actually) ended
after Doc Watson appeared to sing a special song in tribute to
Merle.
