Merlefest 2006 information
Merlefest was named in memory of Doc Watson's son, Merle, and the 19th annual event will take place April 27-30 2006 in Wilkesboro, N.C. and will feature Nickel Creek, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark and Béla Fleck & the Flecktones.

MerleFest Report – Day TWO, April 29, 2005
Today was a non-stop whirlwind of roots-based acoustic music from 11AM to 10PM. The 13 MerleFest venues were all in action, and it was more like a 13-ring circus, in a very positive sense, for both the fans and the performers as everyone hurried from one stage to the other.

Our day got off to a familiar start when we arrived at the medium-sized Americana Stage to
catch the last few songs of The Greencards who received a standing ovation from what seemed to be a “new” crowd,
surprisingly pleased by what they had just heard.

The international theme continued in the Dance Pavilion with The Duhks (“ducks”) –
a hot punk-looking group of talented musicians offering their own brand of fusion music blending
bluegrass, French-Canadian fiddle tunes wrapped in their own energy-packed interpretations.

Traditional bluegrass is still going strong especially as delivered by King Wilkie
(named after Bill Monroe’s horse) from Virginia on the Watson Stage.

Then we were off to the Hillside amphitheatre (second-largest stage) to see
The Greencards for their second of three performances today.

It is easy to make friends with strangers if they are wearing “rare” The Greencards T-shirts.
So after the show, Bill introduced himself to Adres Vasquez, Becki Williams and Patti Meredith
who all posed for this fashion-statement photo. Later, browsing the gift shop, the staff asked Bill
where he got his T-shirt as so many fans were looking to buy them although none were in stock.

Songwriters in the Round offered a glimpse of the fun these creative individuals have
sharing their new works with each other. Today the group was made up by Texas newcomers
Caroline Herring, Hayes Carll matched with veterans Tim O’Brien and Jim Lauderdale.

The Duhks were on the main Watson Stage to start the evening shows and
were joined by the always innovative Bela Fleck for a couple of numbers.

A very special set of blues, rock-a-billy and 50’s pop flat-pickn’ was offered by Doc Watson
with his grandson Richard (Merle's son) and long-time bassist T Michael Coleman.

Our evening ended with the master of the dobro, Jerry Douglas.
