The annual Variety Bash celebrates a year of fundraising, as dedicated Variety ‘Bashers’ drive their decorated pre-1970 cars through country areas to support isolated and special needs kids. This year’s Bash will take off from Garden Island at the Royal Australian Navy Base on Sunday 5th August, and will then embark on a thirteen day adventure around country NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory visiting towns such as Dubbo, Brewarrina, Thargomindah, Charleville, Longreach, Richmond, Burketown, Borroloola, Katherine and finishing in a large party at Darwin! The Bash is about putting the 'fun' back into fundraising with fantastic theme days and pranks, our main goal remains – raising as much money as possible for Australia’s special needs children. The 2006 Variety Bash raised over $1.7million (NET), and this year’s Bash is bound to exceed this amount to allow Variety to help even more children in need. Variety, The Children’s Charity is dedicated to improving the quality of life of special needs children. Kids in need directly benefit from the wonderful services and special equipment provided by Variety including wheelchairs, modified tricycles, musical equipment, sports programs, special needs children’s camps, Sunshine Coaches, Braille typewriters, walkers, the innovative Liberty Wheelchair Swings, and more recently the Variety Show of Hearts Scholarship Fund. Last year alone, Variety, The Children’s Charity granted over $3.1 million in Appeals across NSW. Highlights of the 2006 Appeals include, $834,000 for wheelchairs, $566,000 for hospital and retrieval equipment for neonates and children, 14 Liberty Swings, 9 Sunshine Coaches and 17 Show of Hearts Scholarships. The Bash is an integral part of Variety’s fundraising efforts. The Variety Bash does not draw any funds from the communities visited, it only leaves money behind, and in many cases the Bashers donate playground equipment, books, Liberty Swings and other items to schools and community groups along the way. and fill out the online entry form or pick up the current Groove Magazine for only $4.95 in newsagents everywhere. Research on the Bee Gees Tamworth, Wednesday 23 May 2007: In a mere five weeks, the collection of local lovely ladies have hand-made a beautiful quilt featuring an array of roses from a special CD that has been developed to assist in raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis. The CD, which contains 65 rose machine embroidery designs, has been produced by Maureen Russell (who’s grandson Justin was born with the condition) and has already sold-out generating more than $10,000 for the Foundation. The term 65 Roses has become quite well-known across the world as it is what some children with Cystic Fibrosis call their disease as the words are much easier for them to pronounce. This term has become quite well-known across the Tamworth thanks in part to country music favourites, The Wolverines, who are official ambassadors for the charity. The country music connection paralleled with the ‘Loose Threads’ makes Tamworth an ideal location for such a unique fundraising activity. “Tourism Tamworth will be selling raffle tickets to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis with the main prize the magnificent quilt the ‘Loose Threads’ have created.” said Ms Rebel Thomson, General Manager, Tourism Tamworth. “We will be selling raffle tickets over the next couple of months and it will be drawn at the commencement of the 2007 Great Escape Car Rally which kicks off here in Tamworth.” The upcoming annual ‘Great Escape 2007’ fundraising car rally will kick-off in Tamworth on Monday 3 September and heads to Charleville, Longreach, Eungella, Airlie Beach (and the Whitsundays) and Reedy Creek Winery before reaching Ballina on Thursday 13 September, 10-days later. As a unique fundraising activity for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, participants and spectators along the trip can expect to see something a little different, a little unpredictable and a whole lot of fun. Tourism Tamworth has supported the rally and has gone as far as to enter its very own rally car (and support vehicle) to assist in raising much-needed funds for research into Cystic Fibrosis in addition to holding some other special activities during September that will be announced over the coming weeks. Tickets in the raffle for the rose quilt went on sale on Saturday 5 May and will continue to be sold right up until the Monday 3 September at a cost of $2 per ticket. For further information about the quilt raffle or other events currently being organised to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, or details about other activities held in the Tamworth region, please contact Tourism Tamworth on 02 6767 5300 or log onto www.visittamworth.com . A phoney motel, known only as the “Pop Star Motel” A local website promoting the annual Festival allows viewers to leave accommodation requests for our busiest time of the year. Innocent festival goers leave their email address and contact information for accommodation providers to contact if they have accommodation available on the dates stated. Now Tourism Tamworth is warning those classified placers to be careful. Three individuals who have placed classifieds have contacted Tourism Tamworth in the past month to check that their accommodation offer is legitimate. A phoney motel, known only as the “Pop Star Motel” has been emailing individuals and claiming availability for the desired stay period. The email goes on to offer accommodation at $160 per night for accommodation and breakfast. Of course, they also mention that it is their peak time and that to secure their room; guests must provide credit card details immediately. What’s more, the email includes images of the hotel which would not look out of place on the beaches of Hawaii with their sweeping palm trees and poolside bungalow. With images to tempt, the Pop Star Motel claims their address is 3644 Peel Street. “This is a huge concern for us. The last thing we want is for anyone anticipating a great festival experience to arrive here only to find that their accommodation does not exist. We have contacted the website who has since put a notice on their classifieds page however we are asking all interested visitors to ensure they book their accommodation through legitimate channels,” said Ms Rebel Thomson, General Manager, Tourism Tamworth. Tourism Tamworth is putting the final touches on their Festival Information Guide which is the booklet sent out to all interested Festival-goers. This guide contains factual information that is compiled by Tourism Tamworth and all information including contact details are checked with the operators. The 2008 Tamworth Country Music Festival presented by Telstra Information Guide will be available from the beginning of June 2007. If you would like to find out more information about the 2008 Tamworth Country Music Festival presented by Telstra, or alternatively if you’re planning a trip to Tamworth at anytime of the year to see what hidden delights are on offer in the region, contact Tourism Tamworth on 02 6767 5300 or visit www.visittamworth.com Administration 02 6765 4875 E-mail or Coordinator 0408 255908 E-mail http://www.thepub.com.au/camerata/html/information.html 5 - 8 July 2007 Planning is also underway for the 2007 Hats Off to Country Festival with the introduction of the new event the “Grand National Champion of Champions”. Tamworth Regional Council has also expressed its support in the 2007 event. The Tamworth Moteliers Association has agreed to a three year deal (2006-08) as a major sponsor of the new “Grand National Champs event.
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said it was the first time an Australian act had been signed by a Chinese record label and the deal would certainly open the door for future Queensland talent. “Nik’s debut performance at the Guangdong International Tourism and Cultural Festival in November last year was an undeniable hit and made quite an impression on China’s entertainment elite,” Mr Beattie said. “Pacific Audio and Video Company is China’s equivalent of Sony Music and is a subsidiary of Radio Guangdong, which broadcasts across the whole of mainland China – it doesn’t get much bigger than that! “PAV is confident Nik’s album will appeal to China’s middle-class college student market.” Southport-born Nik Phillips said he was excited about where this next adventure would take him. “It’s very exciting, and a bit complicated … because no-one’s done it before,” Mr Phillips said. “But PAV and I are both eager to see where it will go. There is something tangible there – a real connection – despite the language differences.” Nik said it was not altogether surprising that both Brisbane and Beijing had recently been named two of Billboard Magazine’s “five unlikely cities spawning exciting new sounds”. “I can remember when Brisbane was thought of as a place you had to leave to succeed. But, when I was in China last year I was surprised by how interested the Chinese people were in Australian music and culture. It’s an exciting meeting ground!” Premier Beattie said Nik performed up to 300 shows a year playing before crowds at venues ranging from local hotels through to capacity football stadium events such as the State of Origin. “Nik has written, recorded and performed both the official Queensland State of Origin and Queensland Reds theme songs. “His song Come Back Soon was used by the Red Cross for its East Timor campaign which helped to raise over $70 000 for two of the country’s orphanages. “And this year he was nominated for a Golden Guitar Award for Best New Talent at the Tamworth Country Music Awards. “If you don’t know of him yet, you can bet it won’t be long before you do.” Nik’s album ‘Songs from the 4th Floor’ is expected to hit mainland China within the first half of this year and is available for licensing in all territories. In August last year Rhonda Sinclair set up blurb creative solutions as a media and marketing agency to support artists and musicians in Tamworth and interstate. Many are singer -songwriters well established in their craft and significantly recognised for their work - Jean Stafford, Keri McInerney, Michael O’Rourke, Alby Pool, Nellie Donovan, Nick Cesta, Terry & Jenny Bennetts, Sally- Anne Whitten, Those Gals, Dean Johnson, Jude D’Lasselle, bush poet laureate Carol Heuchan and LBS Music Australia - LBS Record Label Artists Shaza Leigh, Lindsay Butler, Noel Parlane, Tom Maxwell, Melissa Bajric and Naomi Therese. Two major event organisers TSA Tamworth Songwriting Association and TIARAs Tamworth Independent Artists Recognition Association have also benefited from the media distribution support by blurb creative solutions and Rhonda’s personal contribution on both organizing committees. TSA also benefited from valued sponsorships Rhonda obtained from the Southern Cross University (Contemporary Song of the Year) Myers Badges (Gospel Song of the Year) and ACMEC Records (Comedy/Novelty Section) including the award presentation in January by the Head of the Contemporary Program at SCU. In May Rhonda worked with Camerata founders Joan Douglas and Greg Williams to secure an Australian Council for the Arts grant funding announced in October of $7500 for the 2007 College. Earlier in the year she assisted Dale Duncan in his representations for ACMF endorsement on his Malabar Mansion Project and the dedication of funds through albums sales to the heritage museum. Blurb Creative Solutions works interstate with VoicePro in Brisbane run by professional audio specialist and 101.5fm Caboolture presenter Daryl Kirkup. Daryl provides audio support on specifically designed client powerpoint presentations created by Rhonda. Blurb also worked with Australian contemporary writer Steve Charles to provide a jingle for a new Tamworth based storage complex Alarmed Self Storage. A longer term project has been the transcribing and editing of CMR broadcaster Brian Howard’s autobiography expected to be released next year. 2006 and the end of 2005 were incredibly busy times and very fulfilling for many blurb clients most significantly Jean Stafford and JLCM-Group Marketing. At the Will Rogers Academy of Western Artists 11th Annual Awards in September in Dallas Texas Jean was awarded AWA 2006 Western Swing Female Vocal of the Year for her single STEELIN’ THE 2 STEP – a tribute song to Bob Wills - nominated in two categories Female Vocal of the Year and Song of the Year. In September the song made US history as the first non-US artist to top the charts and remain there for 24 consecutive weeks. Similar success followed in UK and Europe in November charting at No. 1 in POLAND No.1 in The NETHERLANDS No. 1 in FRANCE x 3 consecutive weeks No. 1 in SPAIN No. 1 in HOLLAND No. 2 in SWEDEN No. 4 in Denmark No. 8 in BELGIUM No 10 in the UK No. 10 in GERMANY Plus airplay in many other European countries. In August Bellbird Music released a re-issue of an early gospel album and in December Jean signed an Australian and NZ distribution deal with Rajon Music. ‘Jean’s trip to the States was totally unexpected for everyone and it’s fantastic that she has been recognised for what is a great song. It’s a huge effort from such an established artist who has lead the way in many career firsts. Any fan of western swing can understand the hype surrounding the song if they know their history and the dues owed to Bob Wills. What’s really amazing is that an Australian female artist wrote, recorded and co-produced it AND won a significant award in Dallas Texas for a song that sat at no 1 on the US Western Swing Charts for SIX months and was dedicated and played in the Lincoln Centre in New York. Pretty amazing stuff really.’ Michael O’Rourke received seven nominations in 2006. Two Gold Guitar nominations for Male Vocal & Heritage Song of the Year, two Southern Star Independent nominations for Male Vocal & Heritage Song of the Year, two Top Ten ACMLA Listener nominations for Heritage Song of the Year and Bush Ballad of the Year and a QLD Gold Medallion nomination for Male Vocal of the Year with his co-written song ‘The Hat’ produced by James Roche and Michael Fix. Newcomer Nellie Donovan released a new album in January 2006 and a Ross Woods filmed video clip which made the Top Ten MUSICOZ The Channel (V) Best Unsigned Video Clip Award. After an extensive round of touring in Queensland and appearances at Mildura and Gympie Nellie has been selected to attend the 2007 CMAA College and is a 2007 Starmaker finalist. ‘Jean, Michael and Nellie are three artists who had a big year this year. Dale Duncan Terry & Jenny Bennetts and Dean Johnston are a couple more who achieved many things. In fact everyone worked so hard this year to achieve either more than last year or to make greater inroads. I have to say that every client is dedicated and they all work extremely hard to promote their music and the industry.’ ‘Also significant was working with LBS and Lindsay and Shaza when they released LBS’s 100th album. It too is an incredible feat in itself. I got to spend some time in October at the LBS Robina Studios when I visited Brisbane for the Big Sound Music Industry Conference at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. It was a perfect opportunity to gain greater insight into emusic and the digital music industry internationally.’ ‘The last twelve months plus have been hard work but I’ve had so much fun being a part of each moment for each client and the various committees. It really has been worthwhile working on different projects seeing the results and sharing the fun’ Rhonda said. contact: Rhonda Sinclair mobile: 0438 902413 Glen Hannah Scott Hills They are both graduates of Southern Cross University’s unique Bachelor of Contemporary Music degree. Scott, from Alstonville in the Northern Rivers, joined the ranks of Australia’s top country performers when he and his band, The Flood, won a coveted Golden Guitar award at the Tamworth Country Music Awards this year. Multi-talented Glen, who now lives at Avoca on the NSW Central Coast, is making a name for himself in both music and design. A well respected and accomplished guitarist who plays with Kasey Chambers’ band, Glen has also played and sung with Troy Cassar-Daley, written songs with Felicity Urquhart and been a session musician with many leading Australian artists. In addition to his musical career, Glen has his own graphic design business, Goonga Design, and has been lead designer for Music Sales for the last six years - designing music books and covers for artists such as Delta Goodrem, The Living End, Kasey Chambers, The Wiggles, Pete Murray, Thirsty Merk and Lior. His graphic art is in great demand and his work is now recognised throughout the music and publishing industry. Scott is drummer for The Flood, a country-roots band which received their Tamworth award in the best group or duo category. He has also performed with other leading Australian musicians including Graeme Connors, Troy Cassar-Daley, Melinda Schneider, Sara Storer, Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole, Tommy Emmanuel and Marcia Hines. “I’m only the new guy in the band, but it was great to be sharing the stage with all the other Golden Guitar winners like Paul Kelly and John Williamson. It’s an award The Flood really deserves,” Scott said. Scott said the Southern Cross University connection was now Australia-wide. “More and more at festivals and shows I come across the familiar faces of people who have also studied at SCU,” he said. “It meant everything to me to get into the Southern Cross University course, mainly because of the staff. They are some of the most renowned musicians in the country.” For Glen, too, the best part of the course was the lecturers. “They were outstanding teachers,” he said. Other successful Bachelor of Contemporary Music graduates include Joe Hansen (Grinspoon), James Haselwood (Dissociatives), Richard Sanford (Delta Goodrem's New York Musical Director), Scott Aplin (Delta's Australian MD), Jodi Martin (singer and songwriter), Sam Hawksley (guitarist, songwriter, and producer) and Ramesh Sathiah (partner in Songzu – a leading sound design company). Associate Professor Jon Fitzgerald, course coordinator of the Contemporary Music Program, said there were many advantages to studying at Southern Cross University. “The small size of the town and university means that students jam and socialise together from the start. We also hold a first-year music camp to help this process,” he said. “As a result they find themselves trying a wide range of musical styles that they might not have considered in the city (nor had a chance to try). This often leads to career opportunities they never envisioned. “The program offers performance, composition and music production majors - so students are involved in a lot of real-life music industry-style collaborations, while the extensive SCU graduate network often provides an industry entry point for talented graduates.” Wendy Broome Faculty Administrative Support Officer Faculty of Arts (02) 6620-3125 THE GREATEST AUSSIE TALENT QUEST EVER The Seven Network is searching for the very best undiscovered entertainers across the country – and we’re offering a $$$GRAND PRIZE! Rick Gough 0407762676 The consumer focused, news-based website will feature both local and international contributors reviewing country based product and the big events in country music - from Tamworth through to Nashville and beyond. It also features The Music Network’s Country Hot 30 National Country Airplay Chart along with links to CMC’s Top 30 Countdown and R&R’s US Country Airplay Chart. The site’s launch on July 10 featured an exclusive online video interview with Adam Brand, shot during final rehearsals for his What A Life tour across Australia, as well as an interview with Big & Rich sidekick Two Foot Fred - shot during the CMA Festival in Nashville in June. In the next couple of weeks more artist interviews will be posted along with footage from the CMA Global Artist showcase in Nashville last June, featuring Jake Nickolai and Telstra Road To Tamworth winner Nick Kingswell. The site will support both new and established talent and one of it’s main goals is to cater to the immediate needs and expectations of a new generation of country music fans. “The emergence of the Country Music Channel and artists like Adam Brand, The McClymonts, Keith Urban, Travis Collins, Steve Forde and The Baileys (who are attracting large audiences under the age of 30 at their shows) has seen interest in country music from the youth market increase significantly. With this in mind, one of the main focuses of the site will be to cater to the needs of this market. The site will present country music in a manner this market considers relevant and relatable, and news will be delivered in the immediate form that kids and young adults now demand,” says site creator Tim Holland. “As the site moves forward and establishes its readership, I’ll be using the site to work with our strategic partners in country music to develop new initiatives to assist in the growth of the genre. One of my main goals with the site is to assist in establishing a greater digital presence for local country music artists.” “Ultimately I envisage the site becoming a useful sales and promotional tool for local artists, tour presenters and locally based retail campaigns. I’m working on a number of promotional initiatives to ensure that this happens sooner rather than later.” There will also be opportunities for emerging talent to build their profile as guest interviewers and presenters. You can visit the site now at www.timhollandcountry.com For more information on the site itself and advertising and sponsorship opportunities, contact Tim Holland on (+61 2) 9358 1600 or at tim@timhollandcountry.com
In a widely anticipated result, Eric was announced the winner and presented with a special award during the Cavalcade Of Stars concert in the Tamworth Town Hall on Friday night. Eric published the first volume of his "History Of Country Music In Australia" in 1975, following in 1983 with the second volume. Since then, the work has been the only comprehensive, definitive historical work covering country music in Australia, and, specifically, the careers of country music artists since "the beginning" up to the early 1980s. Last year, Eric combined and republished the two books into one volume and the work is still in high demand. Eric is also well known as the creator and owner of Selection Records, arguably the most successful and significant independent country music label in Australia. Also a songwriter of note, Eric was involved for many years with the Tamworth Songwriters' Association helping it to establish as the nation's leading Australian country music songwriting organisation through the late 1970s and '80s. The Australian Country Music Literary Award has been introduced by the Australian Country Music Foundation to recognise excellence in the recording and writing of Australian country music history and to encourage much more of the same.

In a keynote speech last night at the Powerhouse in Tamworth, Joan Warner, CEO of Commercial Radio Australia (CRA), made the controversial statement “don’t call it country”!!! Chances are that well known country acts Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, John Denver and even Elvis would not have made it at commercial radio if they had been promoted purely as country singers. CCMC will be taking up Warner’s offer to meet with key programmers from major broadcasting stations to explore the possibility of developing a closer working relationship with commercial radio. During the event hosted by APRA and CCMC, Network Ten’s Angela Bishop received the CCMC Award for Media Excellence for her continued support and unbiased reporting on country music events and the CCMC Artist Award for Excellence went to Adam Harvey for his efforts in taking Australian country around the world. Slim Dusty Foundation board chairman Doug Thompson said subject to finances a development application should be lodged with Kempsey Shire Council in as little as six months. The project to build the Heritage Centre has attracted sponsorship from some big National Companies. $100,000 was raised at Slim's Tribute Concert during Tamworth Country Music 2004 Festival. The foundation's office is in the ABC building at Kemp St. Kempsey. Anyone interested in what the Heritage Centre will be like when completed can view it's progress on the foundation's web site www.slimdustycentre.com.au When completed the heritage centre will house 20 separate sections that will feature three animated Slim Dustys, flying owls and dingo gorge. There will also be a Pub with no beer complete with caricatures of famous Australians and a semi trailer full of sheep. There will be two waterfalls, one inside the building and one outside, an opal mine, a truck stop, a dance hall, a restaurant and conference facility area. The Centre will also feature a gallery, retail section and an outdoor concert facility that will accommodate up to 2000 people and a large car park. On the 13th July the local radio station announced the federal government had contributed $1.5 million towards the project.
