Tamworth, Friday 6 July 2007: It’s what we all ready know…
John Williamson is one of the best Australian musicians in the
country with tickets to the ‘Golden Guitars salute to John
Williamson’ concert [to be held in Tamworth tomorrow evening as part
of the annual Hats Off to Country Festival], selling out earlier
today.
The show, designed to pay homage to the ‘true-blue’ Aussie, will
feature some of Australia’s best country music artists and musicians
such as The Songbirds; Gina Jeffreys, Beccy Cole and Sara Storer, as
well as Brendon Walmsley, Lindsay Butler, Tracy Coster and Jeff
Brown; and the concert will also be MC’d by bush poet and larrikin
Jim Haynes.
Audience members can prepare to be wowed with the various
interpretations of his songs. The concert tribute to the Mallee Boy
features some of Australia’s most respected country music artists
and will deliver a unique showcase of John Williamson’s much-loved
music from a career that has spanned over decades and continues to
win over new fans.
“We have sold out with people coming from everywhere to see this
once in a lifetime concert paying homage to John - the show has been
very popular and we have received enquiries continually ever since
it was first announced in April,” said Mr David Woodward, Tourism

This truly special event sees fans from across Australia, including
Melbourne, Queensland and South Australia, coming together in
Tamworth to celebrate John Williamson’s contribution to this
continually popular industry.
“As the Hats Off to Country Festival continues to grow and cement
its place as a unique mid-year event on the country music calendar,
we felt it was appropriate to create a unique climax to accompany
it, and the tribute concert to John Williamson was the perfect idea
to bring together what this Festival is all about,” added Mr

Tamworth, Thursday 5 July 2007: Australia’s Country Music
Capital has come alive once again to the beat of the drum, the strum
of the guitar and sound of country music fans applause as the annual
mid year celebration of country music, the annual Hats Off to
Country Festival gets underway in Tamworth today.
Now in it’s seventh year, the next four days will feature over 80
artists in a combined 150+ hours of entertainment as country music
enthusiasts have the opportunity to see and hear some of the best
emerging talent in the industry, as well as a few of the best acts
in the business.
Visitors and residents alike can get amongst the festivities and
enjoy the likes of established artists, emerging stars and country
music legends such as the Young Balladeers, Luke O’Shea and the
Medicine Wheel, Chad Morgan, Brett Dallas and Dirtwater, as well as
many Festival favourites such as Lonnie Lee, The Pigs, Bill Chambers
and Sam Smyth’s Bush Poets & Balladeers.
The pinnacle event of the Hats Off to Country Festival this year is
the ‘Golden Guitars salute the songs of John Williamson’ concert
featuring feature John Williamson, Gina Jeffreys, Beccy Cole, Sara
Storer, Brendon Walmsley, Lindsay Butler, Tracy Coster and Jeff
Brown, and will be MC’d by Jim Haynes. The show will be held on
Saturday 7th July in ‘Blazes Auditorium’ at West Tamworth League
Club; and with tickets selling very quickly, Tourism Tamworth urges
everyone to hurry up and purchase tickets to avoid the
disappointment of missing out.
Festival-goers will also be asked to dig deep this weekend with the
inclusion of two charity concerts on the program; the Westpac Rescue
Helicopter Fundraiser at the Alandale Motor Inn on Saturday (10am –
10pm) with special guests Leanne Coddington (2007 Telstra Country
Music Queen) and Joanne Lambert (the ‘Newcastle Angel’).
Also on the program is the Country Art 4 Cancer exhibition
(incorporating the Black & White Ball and Charity Auction).
Featuring more than 40 artworks donated by an array of Australian
personalities including Tania Kernaghan, The Sunny Cowgirls, Troy
Cassar-Daley, John Williamson, and the King of Pop himself, Mark
Holden, the works will be auctioned off during the Cancer Council’s
Ball on Saturday evening with proceeds going to The Cancer Council
Tamworth, to assist those affected by cancer.
“The Hats Off to Country Festival continues to grow every year as
more people become immersed in the country music culture and what
the Australian Country Music Capital has to offer year-round,” said
Ms Rebel Thomson, General Manager, Tourism Tamworth.
“The atmosphere in the city is building and the anticipation of the
fun-filled events of the next four days has captured everyone’s
interest – visitors and residents alike.”
“We have continued to receive a high number of enquiries about the
Festival through the Visitor Information Centre from people wanting
to know about Hats Off. This year, in addition to having great
support from the local community, Tourism Tamworth has sold tickets
to country music fans from a-far a-field as Victoria, Queensland and
South Australia which reinforces the Festival’s growing popularity,”

Off Festival
Tamworth, Wednesday 4 July 2007: With only a couple of days
to go until the 2007 Hats Off to Country Festival gets underway,
Tourism Tamworth is encouraging all residents and visitors alike to
become involved and support this special mid-year celebration of
country music held in Australia’s Country Music Capital.
“There are more than 80 artists taking part in the Festival
including some of the biggest names in the industry such as John
Williamson, Gina Jeffries, Beccy Cole, Sara Storer, Chad Morgan,
Bill Chambers, Young Balladeers and local acts The Baileys and Aaron
Bolton,” said Ms Rebel Thomson, General Manager, Tourism Tamworth.
“With more than 150 hours of entertainment on the program, everyone
can be guaranteed of seeing some of the best established and
up-n-coming acts during the Festival.”
Since its inception in 2000, the Hats Off to Country Festival has
continued to grow in popularity and is now seen as a platform for
emerging artists to find their feet thanks in part to the Tamworth
Camerata College and the CCMA Winter Junior Talent Quest.
“As the cooler weather sets in, the Hats Off to Country Festival has
become the perfect antidote to the winter months as visitors are
able to rug up next to an earth-warm fire and hear some of the best
new music in the industry,” added Ms Thomson.
The feature event will be the ‘Golden Guitars salute the songs of
John Williamson’ featuring feature John Williamson, Gina Jeffreys,
Beccy Cole, Sara Storer, Brendon Walmsley, Lindsay Butler, Tracy
Coster and Jeff Brown, and will be MC’d by Jim Haynes. Scheduled to
be held on Saturday 7 July in ‘Blazes Auditorium’ at West Tamworth
League Club, this unique tribute concert showcases the influence of
John Williamson on the Australian country music industry and allows
industry colleagues to pay homage to the ‘true-blue’ Aussie.

- Willo’s songs to be presented to a packed
house
John Williamson is looking forward to “one of the most
relaxing gigs” of his life this Saturday night in Tamworth. The
Golden Guitars Salute the Songs of John Williamson will afford the
prolific song scribe the chance to sit back and analyse his words,
coming out of other singers’ mouths.
- “I often worry if I’ve only written songs for myself, and
that nobody else can sing them,” John said. “I used to sing some of
Slim’s songs, Stan Coster’s, Eric Bogle’s, and we all did that in a
kind of supportive way – we were helping each other out, rather than
doing American covers.”
- John is rapt that he’s the subject of this special event, and
believes it’s a “great sign of the times” that Australian artists
would pay homage to a fellow Aussie. “I suppose it’s a testament to
my songs, and I haven’t had that before. It’s going to be good to be
relaxed and sit back and have a good time at the show,” he said.
“I’m very flattered by it, so I’ll be wearing another cap on the
night. I’m looking forward to hearing other people’s interpretations
of my work and to hear a quality band playing those songs too.”
Artists who will perform on the night are Gina Jeffreys, Beccy Cole,
Sara Storer, Brendon Walmsley, Tracy Coster, Jeff Brown, Lindsay
Butler, Jim Haynes and the man himself will close the show.
Less than a week out from the event tickets are very close to
selling out, so anyone thinking they might grab a ticket on the
night could be in for a disappointment. Tourism Tamworth staff said
there had been strong interest in the event since tickets were
released two months ago.
This unique event, a joint presentation of Tourism Tamworth and the
CMAA, will be staged in Blazes showroom at West Tamworth League Club

- Bush babies’ gather to
pay tribute to Willo
- The Hats Off to Country Festival is now
only weeks away and tickets are selling fast for the main event –
the Golden Guitars Salute the Songs of John Williamson. This
star-studded concert features the talents of Gina Jeffreys, Beccy
Cole, Sara Storer, Jim Haynes, Jeff Brown, Tracy Coster and Lindsay
Butler – and the man himself – John Williamson. For bush balladeer
Jeff Brown, performing on the tribute concert is “an absolute
privilege”.Jeff acknowledged that John Williamson has long been an
Australian icon, but it wasn’t until he was around 17 years of age
that Jeff really got into John’s music.
“I had just broken my ankle and as I was unable to work outside, my
mother brought home a couple of John’s ‘live in concert’ videos for
me to watch,” Jeff said. “Having time on my hands, I watched them
over and over, and the more I watched them the more I appreciated
what a talented and a great muso he is.”
Jeff said one of the highlights of his career to date was at the
2005 Tamworth Country Music Festival when John’s manager, Phil
Matthews, called and invited him to perform on John’s show in
Bicentennial Park.
“It was a great feeling then and it’s a real honour now to be a part
of this tribute to John. I believe he’s well and truly earned his
place as an Australian icon and a legend in the Australian country
music scene. May he keep on making great music for many years to
come.”
Since launching his new CD, Harvest Time Again, in January at
Pittsworth, and marrying wife Lyn on January 13, 2007 has shaped up
to be a pretty busy year for Jeff. He has toured constantly,
performing at festivals all over the country, and will be appearing
in Tamworth during Hats Off with The Young Balladeers – Dan and Matt
Manning, Nathan Charlton and Amos Morris.
Another “bush baby” appearing on the show, who is also a major John
Williamson fan, is Golden Guitar winner Tracy Coster.
“I was thrilled to be asked to be a one of the artists chosen to pay
tribute to Willo at Hats Off this year,” Tracy said. “I have admired
and respected John's work for ever. I first got into his music in
the 80s and remember being totally blown away by his writing. His
truly Australian take on music spoke to me.
“I remember playing his CDs True Blue and Fair Dinkum over and over
in the old purple as we travelled from town to town on the road. The
toughest thing of course will be choosing the songs, there are so
many classics! “John is an icon and on top of that a bloody good
bloke and I for one will be proud to pay tribute to him.”
For Tracy, 2007 has been a year of relentless touring and business
as usual – making music, as only a Coster can.
Following a hectic schedule at the Tamworth Country Music Festival
where she was a finalist in the Golden Guitar Awards, Tracy headed
straight off to Tasmania to make her first appearance at the
Launceston Country Music Festival. Tracy was very warmly received by
the folks in Tassie and plans to return again next year.
A follow-up tour of 21 shows in 28 days kept Tracy, and new players
Scott Donaldson and Mitchell King, on the move.
A significant event in the early part of this year for Tracy was
performing at the annual Tent Hill Turn Out.
This was the 10th anniversary of her late father, Stan Coster’s
passing, and was one of the biggest and best events yet. Artists on
the bill such as Anne Kirkpatrick, Brian Young, Rick and Lyn Carey,
Glenn Jones, Ian Quinn and many others made it a memorable turnout
indeed.
This concert will be staged in Blazes Showroom at Wests on Saturday,
July 7, and is a joint presentation of the Country Music Association
of Australia and Tourism Tamworth.

- Hearing a variety of artists sing their own versions of the
songs of acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter John Williamson will
ensure the main event of the Hats Off to Country Festival in
Tamworth is a truly unique experience for concert goers.
Multiple Golden Guitar winner Gina Jeffreys is one artist who would
rarely sing a John Williamson song – but Gina is delighted to have
been chosen for this special event.
“I’ve always had a great respect for John, as he’s written some
truly beautiful songs, with the most magical melodies,” Gina said.
“I am really looking forward to interpreting some of John’s tunes in
my own way.”
Gina is currently touring Australia as part of The Songbirds – a
trio of stars featuring fellow Golden Guitar winners Beccy Cole and
Sara Storer. The Songbirds have played to sellout crowds at several
venues and audience members at the Hats Off concert will get a small
sampling of Songbirds magic – John Williamson style. Since the
January release of Gina’s new album, Walks of Life, she’s been heard
on radio across Australia, and has just released a second single,
Stepped Right In It.
Gina will be joined by a host of Golden Guitar winners on the
star-studded lineup for The Golden Guitars Salute the Songs of John
Williamson – Beccy Cole, Sara Storer, Brendon Walmsley, Jim Haynes,
Jeff Brown, Tracy Coster and Lindsay Butler, together with the
event’s namesake, John Williamson.
Compering the concert is host with the most, Jim Haynes, who’s had a
long and very fruitful association with John Williamson and John’s
manager, Phil Matthews. “John and Phil were so good to me at the
start of my solo career, after I left Bandy Bill & Co,” Jim said. “I
actually sang backing vocals on a couple of John’s albums – Waratah
Street and Boomerang Café, so I was more than happy to be part of
this special event. I don’t do that many covers of other people’s
songs, but John is the exception there.
“I remember reciting Galleries of Pink Galahs on Radio 2UE in Sydney
and John came into the studio and sang the other half of it. We got
some wonderful calls from listeners who enjoyed the presentation. I
will feature another of John’s songs I do in my school shows, so it
will be a lot of fun presenting those on the night as well as
introducing all the other great acts.”

- Unique event salutes a
true blue Australian son
Australian country music is truly coming of age when it can
pay tribute to the songs of one of its own.
- These are the heartfelt sentiments of
multiple Golden Guitar winner John Williamson, whose songs are the
subject of the main event of the 2007 Hats Off to Country Festival –
The Golden Guitars Salute the Songs of John Williamson.
- A multi-artist event featuring some of
the biggest names in the business, the concert is shaping up to be
one of the most unique and exciting events of 2007 – and is the
centrepiece of Tamworth’s winter country music festival.
“I am very flattered that my peers are putting together a show of my
songs,” John said. “As I haven’t heard much of my material performed
by others, it will be quite a thrill for me to hear it. It will be
good to put on my songwriting hat and see how my songs stand up when
interpreted by others. Also – it’s great that Aussies nowadays cover
Aussie material, instead of American. This is a fairly recent thing.
It’s a sign that we’re coming of age.”
Artists who will present their own versions of John’s songs include
Gina Jeffreys, Beccy Cole, Sara Storer, Jim Haynes, Brendon Walmsley,
Jeff Brown, Tracy Coster and Lindsay Butler.
For Compass Bros artist Brendon Walmsley, it’s the ultimate honour,
as it was “the Mallee boy” who inspired the young Queenslander to
first pick up a guitar and sing. “John Williamson is the reason I
got into country music,” Brendon said yesterday. “I was about 15
when he came to Roma, and I came away from that show knowing that’s
what I want to do when I grow up. Most of the songs I first learnt
on guitar were John Williamson songs. I used to listen to the
albums, write down the words and then learn them off by heart. It’s
such an honour to be part of the show.”
Brendon is looking forward to returning to Tamworth for Hats Off, as
he will be in the throes of preparing for a tour of Victoria and
Southern NSW, in the company of Carter & Carter and Dianna Corcoran.
He’s currently writing material for his next album, which he admits
is “long overdue”.

- Country Art for Cancer
Attitude Productions and the Tamworth Cancer Council invites
every one to visit the inaugural Country Art for Cancer exhibition,
free admission, being held at the Tamworth Regional Art Gallery from
6th July to 15th July, during the Hats Off to Country Music
Festival.
On exhibition and for auction will be more than 40 plus items of
artwork have been donated from Australia’s country performers
including The Sunny Cowgirls, Deniese Morrison, Troy Cassar-Daley
and his mum Irene, Merelyn Carter, Jean Stafford, Tania Kernaghan
and her mum Pamela, plus Cat Southern (Starmaker 2006), Amber
Lawrence, Korey Livy, Mark Holden (Australian Idol Judge) and Keith
Potger from the renowned Seekers, Bob Howie plus many many more
country music entertainers who have all donated personally created
artwork that covers a vast range of artistic mediums, from acrylic
paintings to a hand painted dress by Deb Minter.
Upcoming artists such as local painter ShaSandra and Carmen Fraser
(granddaughter of former PM Malcolm Fraser) Brenda Lee Heathcote and
local artists Andrea Bruno & Sally Hill have also kindly donated
their work to be auctioned.
All the donated art work plus special memorabilia donations from the
legendary Rolf Harris and Aussie balladeer, John Williamson, photos
from June Underwood and Bob Howie plus much more will be auctioned
on 7th July at the Country Art 4 Cancer Art Auction during the
Cancer Councils Winter dinner & dance ball at the Tamworth Regional

- As the 2007 Hats Off to
Country Festival fast approaches, organisers have announced a huge
line-up of entertainment for the four-day Festival to be held
Thursday 5 – Sunday 8 July.
The annual mid-year country music celebration has seen massive
growth since its inception in the year 2000 and is expected to
attract over 10,000 fans to Australia’s Country Music Capital in
2007. Crowds are sure to swell even further this year with the
inclusion of a special, one time only concert on the Saturday night
(7th July), providing what will surely be the pinnacle of the 07
event.
As a special tribute to Australian country music icon, John
Williamson, Artist Network, Tourism Tamworth and the CMAA are

Adding to festivities, various pubs and clubs have secured fantastic
entertainment programs for the Festival including The Baileys, the
Young Balladeers, Aaron Bolton and one of Australia's most popular
country comedy stars, Chad Morgan.
Visitors to the Festival will also have the chance to see some of
the best up and coming talent in the industry with the Tamworth
Camerata Graduation Concert (following the conclusion of the
week-long Tamworth Camerata College) being held on the first night
of the Festival, Thursday 5 July. Many of these graduates will then
take part in the annual CCMA Winter Junior Talent Quest which
celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.
